More images of Samsung Galaxy S6 leak, this time showing up a running phone

The Samsung Galaxy S6 is constantly making more news these days with quite a leaked images and specifications of the device. Earlier this week, we saw the image of the completely assembled Samsung Galaxy S6 getting leaked in fluorescent yellow color. This time we have spotted the device to be showing up in three different color options along with its screen on. This leaks that arrives from Iranian blog Toranji, resembles similarity to all the previous leaks, so for the moment we can’t question much about its authenticity.

The flashed screen shows up wallpaper quite resembling the Samsung style, few Android 5.0 Lollipop type notifications, a very similar Samsung design and a physical home button to its front. However, upon minute observation, some new elements include the metal design frame. If this leak is to be believed, we can’t see a complete reshape of the upcoming flagship as projected by the Project Zero for the Galaxy S6.

Alleged-Samsung-Galaxy-S6-leaked-images

According to the recent speculations, the Samsung Galaxy S6 will have anywhere between 5.2”-5.5” Quad HD Super AMOLED display with 1440×2560 resolution. It is said to be powered with a 64-bit Snapdragon 810 chipset and would be running the Android 5.0 Lollipop on-board. However, the rumor mill from various sources have suggested that just like the Galaxy Note 4 Samsung might release and edge variant too along with the flagship Galaxy S6.

However, till we get any official word from the company, we can’t say anything concrete about this at the moment.

Apple gets patent for Communicating Stylus that can convert your handwritten notes into digital copies

Apple has obtained a new patent for a Communicating Stylus or a smart pen that can detect hand movements, translate them into digital text and drawings, and display them the screen of a computing device such as an iPad.

The U.S. Patent and Trademark Office awarded the patent for Communicating Stylus to Apple vide Patent No. 8,922,530 filed on January 2010 and lists Aleksander Pance of California US as the inventor. This stylus can be used for writing or drawing on any kind of surface such as a paper or a white board. It tracks whatever the user is writing and transmits it to a computing device via Bluetooth.

Apple-Communicating Stylus -1

The Communicating Stylus uses motion sensors and accelerometers to detect and transmit handwritten matter. It can also store data for uploading later. This is especially useful for taking notes which can be transferred to an iOS device later on. The stylus can also find good use in a classroom where the teacher can write on paper or white board and the matter can be displayed on a large digital screen or on student’s iPads.

The stylus or smart pen gets activated when it is picked up, pressed to a surface, withdrawn from its dock or turned on manually. As the user moves the stylus to write or draw, the accelerometers track its movement and store it. The recorded data is then sent to the computing device continuously or in bursts as the user wishes. The stylus has different nibs for writing with graphite, ink or any other material. It will also have a capacitive version which can be used to write directly on an iPhone or iPad.

Apple- Communicating- Stylus -2

Smart pens have been developed by several companies, one of them being Livescribe’s smart pen ‘Livescribe 3’ which has some of the features of Apple’s Communicating Stylus. It has an infra-red camera in its tip to capture the handwriting which is then stored or transmitted via Bluetooth to a digital device. However, it requires special paper, bigger chassis and lots of power.

It is worth noting that Apple keeps filing for patents for its various inventions and not all see the light of the day. Although Steve Jobs was against the use of stylus, Apple has filed several patents for stylus till date. Maybe Apple has changed its mind about the stylus now. We’ll have to wait and see if this Communicating Stylus actually goes into production.

Gmail services slowly trickling back into China

After about four days of being cut off from their Gmail, Chinese users are slowly getting back access to it. Gmail traffic in China is slowly picking up and is on the way to pre-outage status. The outage began right after Christmas when Gmail users in China found themselves blocked from using the services.

Google’s Transparency Report indicated that Gmail traffic into China showed a slight rise since yesterday morning. Many users reported restoration of the Gmail services, some still experienced problems.

The Financial Times has reported:

“The episode ended as mysteriously as it began — users of Gmail via POP and Imap servers, who had been frustrated for days trying to send and receive email, suddenly saw their inboxes full again, though some were still reporting delays in receiving emails and others said that their service had not returned.”

Gmail services in China seem to be slowly returning to the earlier status. Gmail’s website has been blocked since long by the “Great Firewall of China” that has barred Chinese users from accessing Gmail and other Google web services like Search and Drive through their browsers. People in China had access to it through third party apps such as Microsoft outlook and Apple Mail using POP, IMAP and SMAP but the Chinese government had blocked this loophole last week.

As for the reason for outage, Google says there is nothing technically wrong at their end. The state-run Global Times says it may be “caused by the China side, by Google itself or a combination of the two.”  Further adding that, “If the China side indeed blocked Gmail, the decision must have been prompted by newly emerged security reasons. If that is the case, Gmail users need to accept the reality of Gmail being suspended in China.

Samsung Galaxy Alpha to be discontinued by next February

Samsung is about to discontinue its Galaxy Alpha in the coming weeks. According to a report by ETNews, Galaxy Alpha will be replaced by Galaxy A5, which is set to launch in South Korea in early February. Production will come to halt once inventory for its materials is exhausted.

Galaxy A series smartphones will retain the Galaxy Alpha’s metal designs, but will settle for specifications to get a superior edge in the competitive mid-range smartphones segment. Moreover, Galaxy Alpha made headlines due to its attractive design but hasn’t been a great smartphone in terms of sales due to its high price tag. Samsung has to rethink their approach due to stiff competition from Chinese manufacturers in the price-aggressive smartphone market.

Analysts and insiders have acclaimed the Samsung’s choice. The Galaxy A5 is having “better price competitiveness based on specifications than its predecessors, and its design is thought to be better than that of the Galaxy Alpha.  It is rumored to be price at $361 (KRW 400,000), which is quite meaningful according to- Chang Jung-hyeok, VP of Atlas Research.

The Galaxy A5 features a 5-inch 720p display powered by a quad-core Snapdragon 410 chipset 2GB of RAM, a 13MP rear camera, a 5MP front camera, 2300mAh battery with an attractive metal unibody design. A 10inch low priced Samsung Galaxy Tab 5 slate reportedly under works

A recent report coming from Netherlands shows that the Korean giant Samsung is currently working on its new 10inch tablet. Recently, large screen tablets seems to be the demand in the coming time as other major manufacturers like Apple is also said to be working on a 12.9inch iPad Pro slab and Sony is also said to working on a 13inch tablet to be brought next year.

The evidence for this tablet from Samsung comes from the Indian import/export tracking website Zauba. Last week on December 22nd the website reported that a new tablet SM-T555 has arrived in the country for research and development. However it was made clear that this tablet was not for retail sales but was still valued to near $354. However if we compare this year Samsung Galaxy Tab 4 10.1 models along with its model numbers they are found to be having the series SM-T530 (Wi-Fi), SM-T531 (3G and Wi-Fi) and SM-T535 (3G, 4G and Wi-Fi). This means that the SM-T555 could possibly be the Samsung Galaxy Tab 5 10.1 having a 64bit Snapdragon 410 chipset and running the Android 5.0. Looking to its trend of release, we can expect the slate to go official around May 2015.

Another Samsung 7inch tablet with model number SM-T1116 also appeared at Zauba and was said to be brought to India only for the testing purpose. Now GeekBench is shedding out some details for the device suggesting it to be an entry level tablet with 1GB RAM, dual-core 1.2GHz Speadtrum SC8830 processor with the Android 4.4.4 pre-installed. Check out this image from Zauba showing up these two tablets.

Xiaomi MiPad2 leaked images

The rumors of Xiaomi’s MiPad2 tablet are already started trickling it. The sequel to MiPad is expected to feature the same 7.9-inch glass display employed on the MiPad, with a 2048 x 1536 resolution.

The leaked image(via Weibo) is a doubtful one since it showcases neither Xiaomi branding nor it is looking like a original MiPad. It will be powered by 2GB of RAM and 1.8GHz Intel Atom CPU inside, instead of quad-core 2.2GHz NVIDIA Tegra K1 processor employed on the MiPad. Xiaomi’s MIUI operating system is running on top of Android Kitkat 4.4.4. An update to Android 5.0 Lollipop will come down the road in 2015.

There is of course no official confirmation yet from Xiaomi about launching of MiPad2. With all focus coming on International CES scheduled on January 6-9, Las Vegas might be the perfect platform to unveil their new slate.

Back panels images and specs for the Xiaomi Redmi Note 2 leaks

Back in October, we had an image which was purported to be the back panel of the Xiaomi Redmi Note 2. This time some images of the phablet have leaked along with some specs for the device.

The specs shows up the Xiaomi Redmi Note 2 to have a 5.5inch screen with a considerable jump in its resolution having a 1080 x1920 pixels. The chipset for the device is tipped to be a 64-bit octa-core MediaTek MT6592 chipset or a Qualcomm Snapdragon 615. The device is said to be having 2GB of RAM memory with 16GB of built-in storage. To its back would be a 13MP primary camera while its front would be having a 5MP camera. The device is said to be running the Android 4.4 KitKat skinned with the company’s own MIUI 6.

However, this specs drift a bit from the previous rumors that claimed the device to be having a 3GB of RAM, a 20.7 primary snapper to its back and a 8MP front-facing selfie camera. The latest reports have claimed that the device could be launched anytime between January 21st and January 28th. Whereas the recently leaked images shows up the back camera sensor to be moved to the left top with a cut-out that is enough large to have a dual flash. There are no speakers grills on the back panel that shows the possibility of front-facing speakers or a grill to its bottom. However, there might be a possibility that these might at all not prove to be the back panel images of the Redmi Note 2 itself hence we would like you to take it with a pinch of salt.

Android M integrating Google services to the cars

Although Android 5.0 Lollipop is a dream of majority smartphone owners, rumors of next-in-line Android M are out. Google is now heading towards automotive dashboards with the objective of injecting Android directly into cars. It will be devoid of smartphones as well as dated proprietary interfaces on blurry displays.

Android M might be the next step after Android Auto which is scheduled to come next year.Currently,Android Auto is far from a seamless solution, since it requires pairing a tablet or smartphone to a compatible car with a built-in screen.

Reuters reported that Google’s digital car engine will be the new functionality added to Android M. This gives rise to new questions on Android. And is the iOS vs Android fight about to reach the motor segment as well? Apple is also working on CarPlay for a while, obviously with no less determinations.

Google has already inked contracts with automobiles giants General Motors, Nissan and Hyundai making more manufacturers believe in Android Auto 2. Moreover, Google has to make sure that the booting should be done instantly as users turn the car on. Also we can expect car makers will come with their own Android car interfaces to differentiate their operating systems somehow.

Functionally, Android M will integrate Google services with the car’s sensors, fuel gauge, camera, and internet connection, opening up all sorts of interesting possibilities. The smart service will make driving easier — like providing list of immediate gas stations directions once gas level reaches a certain threshold level.

The resources offered by the car ecosystem might be advantageous for Google’s advertising business. “You can get access to GPS location, where you travel, where you stop, everyday, your speed, your fuel level, where you stop for gas,” one of the sources said.

TAG Heuer going in for Partnerships and Acquisitions to build its own Smartwatch

In view of the growing popularity of smartwatches, traditional watchmakers are also getting into this field. TAG Heuer had recently announced plans to come out with its own smartwatch. The Swiss luxury watchmaker is going ahead with its plans for the smartwatch that will directly take on Apple Watch and other smartwatches.

Earlier, Jean-Claude Biver, interim chief executive of TAG Heuer had made some dismissive remarks about Apple Watch but he later admitted that he might have underestimated the attraction smartwatches had for people. He said that he had now changed his mind about smart gadgets. Biver also said that in the 4 months since the project was started, the company has begun negotiations for several partnerships and was thinking of making some acquisitions too.

Nothing has been finalized yet but according to rumors, TAG Heuer is working with Intel for providing the chipset to power its smartwatch. Rumors also say that the watch’s operating system would be Google’s Android. However, nothing is clear yet.

TAG Heuer wants to retain all the mechanical functions that form an integral part of its wristwatches and will add the necessary sensors and other components that are needed to make the watch ‘smart’ i.e. to monitor distance walked, steps taken, heart rate measurement and other parameters.

TAG Heuer wants to create a unique quality product that will be different from other smartwatches in the market and will refrain from making any announcement unless and until they have a sure shot product on their hands. The TAG Heuer smartwatch is expected to be launched somewhere in late 2015. The Apple Watch with which it wants to compete is launching in early 2015.

A privacy flaw in Twitter enables third parties to read your direct messages and also send new ones

Many websites and mobile apps let you use your Twitter account to log in to them as it makes the registration process simple and easy. However, due to a privacy flaw in Twitter, these third parties can get access to your direct messages in Twitter.

A search marketing consultant Rishi Lakhani observed this flaw when he was using his Twitter account to sign up with Inbound, a digital marketers’ forum. At the time of login, he got a warning that Inbound will be able to read his direct messages.

Lakhani demonstrated this flaw to Business Insider on a Twitter account created by them. Although he did not have its password, he was able to alter the profile of the account and also receive and send direct messages.

Many websites or apps use the Twitter API (Application Program Interface) to create an auth. login so that the user doesn’t need to sign up separately. When a developer creates a ‘login’ with Twitter access, he has to allow one of the following three permissions to the website or app.

  • Read Only

  • Read Write

  • Read Write DM

This can be seen in the screenshot below:

Twitter-user-permission-access

Now, if a developer chooses the third option for his site, he would be able to read direct messages of the user who logs in. This option may expose the user to “snooping and spamming.”

This is what the authorization screen will look like:

 Auth-Screen

Twitter has over 284 million active users and thousands of companies allow login to their apps and websites through Twitter. As Lakhani says in his website:

A clever spammer could use this tool to their advantage, as it allows some real control over an accounts actions. For example, by time noting user activity, it could be possible to use the account to tweet links for traffic etc when the user is least likely to be using the account, and then delete them. the same goes for DMs.

Sony’s leaked Emails reveal Snapchat turned down over $3 Billion Facebook offer

Apparently, Sony’s leaked emails have revealed the whole story behind Snapchat’s rejection of Facebook’s acquisition offer of $3 billion. Last month, hackers attacked Sony Pictures Entertainment’s email system and stole massive confidential data which has leaked out this story among others.

According to Business Insider, the leaked emails suggest that the Facebook offer to Snapchat was even more than $3 billion. The information has come from emails between Snapchat’s CEO Evan Spiegel and Sony Pictures CEO Michael Lynton who is also on the board of Snapchat, and other Snapchat board members.

Malcom Gladwell sent an email to Michael Lynton asking if the company “was crazy to turn down $3 billion,” to which Lynton replied,” if you knew the real number you would book us all a suite at Bellvue.”

The leaks have also revealed an email written by another Snapchat board member Mitch Lasky saying that Snapchat CEO Spiegel would have gotten $1 billion if the Facebook-Snapchat deal had gone through.

According to the report, the email says, “Evan proposed a new deal today to Tencent and DST that includes $40MM in secondary for him and Bobby. Never told me … in fact told me the exact opposite. When I confronted him about it, he said, “well I just turned down a billion from Zuck.”

As per another email by sent by Lasky, Facebook CEO Mark Zukerberg blamed Snapchat for leaking the news about their deal to the press. It is said that Zukerberg was disappointed that the deal didn’t go through and accused Snapchat for leaking about the deal purposely to boost its fundraising efforts.

Motorola shows off Moto X’s 4K recording capabilities through a video captured by strapping it to a Drone

Moto X (Gen 2) was released by Motorola in September this year and is an impressive upgrade over the original Moto X. Its primary camera has been upgraded to 13Mp capable of Ultra HD 4K (3830 x 2160p) video recording.

Motorola is now showcasing the 4K video shooting capabilities of the Moto X’s camera through a new video.  The company gave the Moto X (gen 2) smartphone to a professional drone operator who strapped it to the drone and took it for a ride over San Francisco. The smartphone’s camera captured aerial 4K video where its features such as auto-exposure and auto-focus also did a great job taking some great footage in both light as well as dark areas.

Since the Moto X weighs much less than the DSLR camera that is usually used, the drone’s flight was 5 times longer. Motorola has edited some of the captured footage in 2K (1080p) and posted the video.

In the video shown below, you can see the stunning 4K imagery captured by the Moto X’s camera in the San Francisco Bay area:
