Few days back at the CES 2015, Samsung didn’t leave the opportunity to unveil the much rumored and the top handset in the Galaxy A series namely the Samsung Galaxy A7. The great thing about the handset is that Samsung has focused a lot upon its designed and has offered the complete package in just 6.3mm of thickness making it the slimmest handset from the company.

Looking to its specs, the Samsung Galaxy A7 hosts a big 5.5inch display panel with full HD resolution of 1920×1080 pixels. The processing power has been increased with the new octa-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 615 chipset with clock speed of 1.5GHz. The deice hosts a powerful 13MP primary camera to its back while a 5MP to its front and runs the Android KitKat version. The battery capacity for the device is 2600mAh. The memory options for the device include 2GB of RAM and 16 GB of internal expandable storage supported with microSD card slot up to 64GB.

The handset is available in three color options of Champagne Gold, Pearl White and Midnight Black. The handset is priced for a $400 tag and is likely to be made available worldwide in coming months.

Mophie introduces new Juice Packs to charge iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus

California-based tech company Mophie is well known for its Juice Pack cases for charging cellphones. The company has now launched Juice Packs for iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus. There are three types of such battery packs and they are available for pre-order at Mophie’s website.

There are two options for iPhone 6 – Juice Pack Air and Juice Pack Plus, but there is only one option available for iPhone 6 Plus. Juice Pack Air doubles the battery life of iPhone 6 while Juice Pack Plus increases its battery life by 120%. In case of iPhone 6 Plus, its juice pack adds only 60% extra to its battery life but since iPhone 6 Plus already has a longer battery life, that shouldn’t be a problem.

The Mophie Juice Packs have bumpers inside the case that add cushioning and protect it in case of impact or hard fall, although we can’t say for sure whether they will prevent the iPhone 6 from bending (#bendgate).

With Mophie’s Juice Pack, you can charge your mobile anywhere by just flipping a switch. The LED indicator in it shows you the Juice Pack battery levels and status of charge. When you keep the phone for charging with the Juice Pack connected to it, your iPhone will be recharged first and then the Juice Pack case.

Juice Pack Air for the iPhone 6 has a capacity of 2,750 mAh and costs $99.95. Juice Pack Plus has a 3,300 mAh cell and costs $119.95. Juice Pack for iPhone 6 Plus has a 2,600 mAh battery and costs $99.95. Although Mophie has not given any release date, it will not be far since pre-orders have already begun.

CES 2015: Hands On with Alcatel OneTouch Watch

Smartphone maker Alcatel OneTouch has announced a series of products at the ongoing CES 2015. The company is stepping into the field of wearables with its own smartwatch dubbed as the ‘Watch’. OneTouch Watch is a line of premium smartwatches with “elegant design at a very accessible price” and look like traditional watches.

“It’s called a wearable, so we wanted to make something that would be a pleasure to wear,” said Dan Dery, Chief Marketing Officer of Alcatel OneTouch. “The watch face and the band are slim, like a regular watch, but it has the multi-functionality of a smartwatch.”

Alcatel’s OneTouch Watch boasts of almost all features of typical mainstream smartwatches, packed with several sensors to monitor the wearer’s activities such as heart-rate monitor, gyroscope, altimeter, accelerometer and e-compass. Users can track their steps taken, distance covered, calories burned and also their sleep cycle. The smartwatch can connect with a smartphone to get call and social media notifications. It vibrates to warn a user when he goes too far from the phone and acts as a remote control for taking photos, listening to music or ring the phone to locate it.

Let’s have a look at the specs of the OneTouch Watch:

DESIGN:

The Watch has a classic round design with a traditional look. The body is made of metal and its strap has a flat clasp. The watch-face is 10.5mm thick, Moto 360 is slightly thicker at 11.5mm and LG G Watch R slightly smaller at 9.7mm.

The Watch comes in different styles and colors including sporty dark red/volcano black, elegant metal-white, feminine all-white and classic chrome/dark gray. It is IP67 certified for dust and water resistance and connects to your smartphone via Bluetooth 4.0.

The Watch has a sleep/wake button, an accelerometer that turns on when a user wants to check the time or notification. It has a 210mAh battery that the company claims will last for up to 5 days and get charged within the hour. The USB charger is embedded inside the wrist band and the Watch can be easily plugged to a computer for charging. No separate cable is needed.

DISPLAY:

The Watch display is 1.22-inches in diameter. The dimension appears to be small but because it is round, except for a small chin, the space available is good enough to have a simple easy-to-read watch face. The small cut off segment at the base has a touch-sensitive panel to get app list or exit an app.

CHIPSET and INTERFACE:

The OneTouch Watch has an ST429 chipset and Alcatel’s own operating system, not the usual Android Wear. The OS takes care of all the Watch features such as basics, heart-rate and health monitoring and notifications.

COMPATIBILITY:

The Alcatel OneTouch Watch is compatible both with smartphnes running Android 4.3 or above and iOS 7 or above. It works with several Alcatel smartphones including Hero 2, Idol X+, Idol 2 Mini, Idol 2, Pop D series, Pop S series and Pop M series.

Overall, the design as well as the price of the Alcatel OneTouch Watch is attractive. It is said to cost just $149, which makes it a great buy for the price. The Watch will be available somewhere in March this year directly from Alcatel.

CES 2015: Hands On with Alcatel OneTouch Watch

Yezz Billy 5S LTE is the new Windows Phone 8.1 based smartphone

At the CES 2015, Miami based smartphone manufacturer Yezz announced its new Yezz Billy 5S that comes with LTE connectivity and is the third Windows Phone from the company. Last year the company had announced Billy 4.0 and Billy 4.7.

The Yezz Billy 5S LTE is a mid-range handset that hosts a 5-inch display with HD resolution of 720×1280 pixels. The handset is powered with a quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 410 chipset clocked at 1.2GHz and comes with 1GB of RAM memory and 8GB of internal storage. To its back is a 13MP primary camera shooter and the front hosts a 5MP secondary camera. The device comes with Dual-SIM support and has a Bluetooth 4.0 connectivity apart from LTE. The device runs the latest available Windows 8.1.

The pricing for the device is yet not known however it is said that just like its other two silings, the company will put an affordable price tag for this too.

HTC Desire 826 with Android 5.0 Lollipop goes official at CES 2015

Yesterday we saw the entry level HTC Desire 320 – the first device to be announced by the company in CES 2015. However, the Taiwanese giant has announced one more handset the HTC Desire 826 which is the first device from the HTC camp to have Android 5.0 Lollipop out of box, of course topped up with the company’s own Sense UI. The HTC Desire 826 is quite similar to the HTC Desire EYE and is a bit larger in dimensions measuring 7.9mm of thickness and weighing 183 grams.

The HTC Desire 826 sports a 5.5inch display having full HD 1080p pixel resolution and comes with the octa-core Qualcomm 615 chipset at heart. The device has got a 13MP camera to its back and a 4MP front-facing secondary camera. The memory options include a 2GB of RAM and 16GB of internal storage expandable via microSD card slot. The handset comes with LTE connectivity and has a battery capacity of 2600mAh.

Entry level HTC Desire 320 is the first smartphone from the company at CES 2015

When all smartphone manufacturers across the globe are making some big announcement, we can’t afford to forget Taiwanese giant HTC. The company which is expected to unveil the much rumored and awaited HTC One M9 has made an announcement for a new entry level handset HTC Desire 320.

The display of the HTC Desire 320, on the other hand, is a 4.5-inch one with a unimpressive resolution of 480×854 pixels, but then again, we are dealing with a low-tier device. At the back, we have a 5MP shooter and a 2,100mAh juicer.

Heading straight to its specs, the Desire 320 hosts a 4.5inch display with a resolution of 480×854 pixels. Under the hood lies a quad-core unspecified chipset with clock speed of 1.3GHz. the memory options include 1GB of RAM, 4-8GB of internal storage and a microSD card slot for expandable memory. To its back is a 5MP primary snapper. The device runs the Android 4.4 KitKat OS topped up the company’s own Sense UI. The battery capacity is 2100mAh.

HTC is to launch this device in selected markets starting from UK. The device will be available in two color options of black and white and still there is no word as of now regarding its pricing. Check out the official images of the device below.

Entry level HTC Desire 320 is the first smartphone from the company at CES 2015

HP unveils 7 new monitors, including 4K, 5K, curved, and 3D virtual displays

HP went furious yesterday at CES 2015 by announcing seven monitors at once. This comprises of one 5k screen, 3D monitor, some curved and 4K monitors.

The HP Z27q is the 27-inch 5120×2880 p resolution monitor, similar to the new iMac with Retina display. Moreover, it has four USB 3.0 outputs, two DisplayPort 1.2 inputs, tilt, swivel, pivot, and height adjustment covering 99% of the overall Adobe RGB gamut. The HP Z27q is available with a affordable price-tag of $1,299 starting March.

HP also launched 27-inch Z27s and 23.8-inch Z24s with 4k display. Both are having 3840×2160 resolution alongwith 1.07 billion colors covered by  sRGB color gamut. Both features four USB 3.0 ports, 1 audio out port, HDMI 1.4, DisplayPort 1.2, Mini DisplayPort,tilt,pivot, swivel and height adjustment. The Z24s will be available in April for $549 while Z27s will be available in January for $749.

 

The three curved monitor variants includes the 27-inch Pavillion 27c, EliteDisplay S270c and the 34-inch Envy 34c.  The 34c has a  3440×1440 resolution along with super wide 21:9 aspect ratio VA panel, dual HDMI (one with MHL), one DisplayPort 2.1, 8-bit color depth covering 98.8% sRGB coverage. It also possess low reflective coating and DTS Audio supported by 6W per channel speakers. It will be available for $999 during April. The 27c variant has a 1080p VA panel, HDMI 1.4, MHL 2.0 with built-in DTS Audio and 4W per channel speaker system. The S270c is almost same practically with a bigger display and is available now for $399.

Lastly, HP launched the 3D Zvr virtual reality monitor. It features a  1080p TN panel with 3D cameras above the display along with one DVI-D port, one DisplayPort 1.2, and two USB 3.0 ports. 3D cameras can track user’s  head movement and with the help of the passive 3D glasses,  users can utilize real-time parallax effect to move objects around relative to the position of their head. This is specifically designed for 3D softwares such as AutoCAD and for places like design studios, schools and various engineering labs. No pricing information of 3D Zvr is available from HP yet.

Lenovo announces 3rd Gen ThinkPad XI Carbon Ultrabook, new ThinkPads, Monitor and more at CES 2015

The Consumer Electronics Show 2015 at Vegas has begun and electronics giants are busy announcing their new products. Chinese major Lenovo has come forward with announcements introducing several new products and its product plans for the future. The company has unveiled its 3rd generation ThinkPad XI Carbon ultrabook and along with it, some new additions to its ThinkPad X, T, E and L series, a new IPS panel, a power-bank with interlocking design as well as some multiple charging accessories.

Lenovo’s 3rd generation ThinkPad XI Carbon ultrabook is the “world’s lightest 14-inch performance ultrabook”, weighing a little less that 2.9 pounds. This iconic brand has sold over 100 million units the world over. The company is going strong in the field of mobile computers and bagged the position of world’s top PC manufacturer in 2013.

“When we acquired IBM’s PC business, we made a promise to not just protect the ThinkPad franchise, but to make it even better, even stronger.  Today, ThinkPad continues to be one of the most respected brands in the industry, fueling Lenovo’s rise to number 1 in the global PC industry,” says Yang Yuanqing, chairman and CEO of Lenovo. “Now, even as Lenovo expands into mobile devices, servers, and ecosystem and cloud computing, ThinkPad will remain at the core of our strategy and the heart of our business.”

The ThinkPad XI Carbon has a rugged carbon-forged chassis enclosing a 5th generation powerful Intel Core processor and a new PCIe solid state drive that gives 80% faster storage performance compared to standard solid state drives. It has a super bright Full HD display offering the best viewing experience. The ThinkPad is priced at $1249 and will be available from this month itself.

Lenovo’s ThinkPad X, T, L and E series will also be updated and these new laptops will also have faster 5th generation Intel Core processors and other characteristic features of the ThinkPad brand: “thin and light, with extended battery life to maximize mobility, and bright and clear displays up to 3K resolution for optimum viewing pleasure and ergonomic comfort”.  These new models will be released in February 2015. Lenovo has also announced a few other devices that will be released in the coming months. Among them is the ThinkVision X24 monitor having a next gen Neo Blade 23.8” ultra-thin IPS FHD panel with a 178⁰ wide-viewing angle. It has a pre-coated metallic back and a thickness of just 7.5mm. It’s pricing starts from $249 and will be available in April 2015.

Lenovo has also announced a new set of mobile accessories called the ThinkPad Stack. All the devices in the stack feature a unique magnetic interlocking design. They help to minimize the clutter of cables and adapters and offer easy portability.

The devices include a 10,000 mAh Power Bank to keep phones and tablets charged on long trips; a one terabyte USB 3.0 Hard Drive, a Wireless Access Point for good Wi-Fi while travelling; and a Bluetooth Speaker that seamlessly pairs with the ThinkPad. All these accessories can be stacked neatly with pogo-pin connections and save a lot of space and clutter.

ThinkPad Stack accessories will become available from mid-April 2015 onward. ThinkPad Stack 10000mAh Power Bank will cost $49.99, ThinkPad Wireless Access Point /1TB Hard Drive Kit will cost $199.99 and the ThinkPad Stack Bluetooth Speaker will cost $89.99.

Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge with curved screen reportedly under tests

There has been quite a buzz from some time about Korean giant Samsung planning to release a Galaxy Note Edge like device with curved screen along with the much rumored Samsung Galaxy S6. Some of the sources have even claimed that the Galaxy S6 Edge will have rounded-off screen at both ends. This is even said to be a special edition phone that would arrive along with the Galaxy S6.

Resembling these rumors about the Edge variant, a similar kind of device has been spotted at Zuaba (India import / export database) and Samsung is believed to have it imported in India for testing purpose. The listed smartphone comes with a codename SM-G925F describing this prototype handset similar to the Galaxy Note 4 (for R&D purpose).

Looking of its codename, there are speculations that this could be the Edge variant of the Samsung Galaxy S6 and the parent handset is believed to have a codename SM-G920 which shows much similarity with the codenames of Galaxy Note 4 and Galaxy Note Edge (SM-N910 vs SM-N915).

It is said that at the CES 2015, the company is likely to show the device only to “selected partners” and not to consumers. It would be interesting to see whether the company releases any presentation or video for the same.

Asus launches its new camera centric Zenfone Zoom

Asus had some big announcements at the CES 2015 yesterday! Along with announcing one-of-its-kind Asus Zenfone 2, the company also has announced a new camera centric Zenfone Zoom smartphone. This is currently the slimmest smartphone on the planet with a 3x optical zoon facility. The 3x optical zoom is the major USP of the device and this feature is even not found in the Samsung’s recently launched K Zoom – the camera centric smartphone series from Samsung. The handset offers a excellent 13MP PixelMaster camera with 10 element lens and a f/2.0 aperture of-course along with the optical image stabilization. The camera also has features like the laser auto focus and a dual-color Red Tone flash tech giving an exquisite point-to-shoot camera experience. The primary camera has also got some manual adjustments like shutter speed and exposure. The camera to its front is the conventional 5MP with wide-angle.

The other specs for the handset includes a 5.5inch IPS-LCD screen with full HD resolution delivering an excellent 400 nits of peak brightness. To its heart lies a powerful quad-core Intel Atom chipset with 64 bit processing capabilities. The dimensions of the device show it to be fairly compact with 11.5mm of thickness and 185 grams of weight. The device packs a good battery with capacity of 3000mAh. The handset is fairly priced with $399 price tag.

Asus launches its new camera centric Zenfone Zoom

Affordable Acer Liquid Z410 smartphone with 64-bit SoC and 4G LTE support announced at CES 2015

CES 2015 is here and will bring with it an abundance of new device announcements. Taiwanese manufacturer Acer has already gone ahead and revealed a new budget smartphone Acer Liquid Z410. The handset boasts of 64-bit processor and Cat. 4 LTE support but costs only €129 (about $154).

At this price, the Acer Liquid Z410 packs some decent specs inside its smart exterior. Specs include 4.5-inch qHD display with a resolution of 540 x 960 pixels and pixel density of 245 ppi and a 64-bit, quad-core MediaTek MT6732 processor with ARM Mali-T760 GPU and 4G LTE (Cat.4) support. There is a 5MP camera at the back with LED flash and a 2MP selfie camera at the front with an 80⁰ wide-angle lens. Unfortunately, Acer has not revealed details of its RAM and internal storage. The battery is also not specified but the company says that the battery will offer talk time of up to 5.5 hours and standby time of up to 400 hours.

The handset has a speaker at the front with DTS Studio Sound. Nothing is mentioned about the Android version it will run but there is talk that the Acer Liquid Z410 will run Android 4.4 Kitkat. The handset will have a new button “AcerRAPID” placed below the camera with which a user can access customizable actions to personalize the user experience. There is also Acer QuickTouch with which a user can control the device with easy one-finger gesture.

According to the company, “The combination of AcerRAPID™ and QuickTouch empowers the Liquid Z410 to get things done faster than ever.”

The Acer Liquid Z410 will hit the shelves of EMEA countries (Europe, Middle East and Africa) by the end of February.

Asus Zenfone 2 with 4GB RAM goes official: Complete Specs and Official Images

Asus has unveiled the second generation Zenfone aka the Asus Zenfone 2 at the CES 2015. Experiencing quite a successful journey first the first series Zenfones, the company has upped the ante with some more powerful 4GB RAM memory, 64 bit chipset and 13MP camera amongst many other things. Here is the complete review for the device.

Design and Display

The design for Asus Zenfone has turned out to be the major USP of the device. Sporting an elegant and classy with metal like finish the handset manages to drag more attention. Some design changes have been introduced in the Asus Zenfone 2 like the volume rocker has been shifted to the back panel similar to the LG flagships. The Zenfone 2 sports a brushed metal finish and has a dual-tone LED to its back panel that smoothly merges with the finish.

 

 

With a 5.5inch screen size, the handset has an pretty good screen-to-body ratio of 72%. The screen is a protective shield of Corning Gorilla Glass 3 and offers full HD resolution of 1080p with 403ppi. The screen for the device offers 400 nits of brightness.

64 bit Intel Atom chipset and 4GB RAM memory

Asus has left no stone unturned as far as the processing speed for the device is concerned with a whopping 64 bit Intel Atom silicon chipset. The device bakes an powerful LTE enabled Intel Atom Z3580 chipset with four cores offering clock speeds up to 2.33GHz. The chip also consists of a PowerVR G6430 GPU with Open GL 3.0 support. The processor is said to be very fast supporting high graphic 3D games and runs the latest Android 5.0 Lollipop OS.

The biggest surprise with the smartphone is its RAM memory. The handset would be available in two different RAM memory options with 2GB RAM for the basic version and a whopping 4GB of RAM for the higher version. This is the first smartphone to be announced with a powerful trio combination of 64 bit chipset, 64 bit Android support and more than 3GB of RAM memory.

Android 5.0 Lollipop and Zen UI

This is the great news as the latest iteration of the Android OS aka the Android 5.0 Lollipop would be running the device. Undeniably it is the Zen UI which now comes with various enhancements adds the charm to the overall interface. Asus is said to have worked on some OS tricks wherein the app and action shortcuts are now merged with gesture controls, various custom themes and icon packs and special one-hand operation and “Kids” mode.

The new features of the Zen UI include Trend Micro security, SnapView, ZenMotion, Zen UI updates and many more.

Camera and Battery Life

As far as the camera segment is concerned, Asus seem to have brought a considerable amount of improvement in this segment. To its back lies a powerful 13MP primary camera with 5 elemt and f/2.0 aperture along with a dual-color “Real Tone” LED flash. The front offers a good 5MP of secondary camera 85 degree wide-angle and is capable of shooting selfie panoramas as well. The PixelMaster software is available for both the cameras with options of shooting in low light conditions with a provision of snapping images with 400% brightness offering very good digital noise cancellation.

The handset has got a substantially good battery backup of 3000mAh Li-Po battery and supports the fast charging tech that charges 60% of the battery in just 39 minutes.

The 2GB variant of the device is priced around at $199 while the 4GB variant is priced for a very affordable $300 price tag.
