Facebook’s new live streaming feature takes on Snapchat

Facebook is constantly experimenting and adding new features to keep users glued to the popular social media network. This Friday, Facebook has rolled out yet another new feature that allows you to watch live events sitting at home. The new service has made its debut with Chicago’s Lollapalooza music festival wherein live event feed is streamed and Facebook users in the US can watch curated photos, videos, public posts and updates published by users, artists and bands at the music festival.

The music festival is being made available on Place Tips, a feature launched by Facebook in January by which users can get information about their friend’s current location. The live streaming is however new. “This Place Tips Lollapalooza experience is just one of the many ways Facebook is trying to help people get the feel of an event when they’re not there,” a spokesperson from Facebook told wsj.

The new feature is a lot like Snapchat’s “Our Story” feature launched last summer by which people attending an event can post pictures and videos of the event into a live stream and users can tap into it from distant locations to watch them. Facebook says that live streaming from Lollapalooza is different from Snapchat’s feature as it also includes content posted by your friends who are attending the music festival.

Twitter is also planning to join the competition with live event coverage by the end of the year. Twitter’s new feature is called “Project Lightening” that will show up a new button to the users on their homepage by clicking which they will be able to see content from live events. Twitter’s Periscope app allows live video streaming from iPhone. Meerkat is another mobile app that allows users to stream live videos over Twitter to their followers.

Facebook says that Lollapalooza is just a test and it will continue to develop the feature for other applications in future.

Russian Internet Authority Sent Official Notice to Facebook, Twitter, Google

Russia has passed a number of laws in the past year. It is seen as nothing less than a censorship. On top of that, recently, Russian’s federal office which handles communications, mass media and information technology which basically handles everything from telecommunications and internet sector, Roskomnadzor, has sent official notice to Google, Twitter and Facebook.

The official notice requests the three big companies to comply with national legislation to provide information on Russian bloggers who have more than 3,000 readers each day as well as to close site which the Russia’s internet authority seen as “unsanctioned protests and unrest”. There is a legislation law which was passed last year which stated that bloggers with large leaderships are required to register with a government agency and have their identities verified. Another legislation which was also passed last year mentioned that the Russians prosecutors are allowed to block sites without a court order.

Google announced in the company’s transparency report which is published twice-per-year that the company has responded to 5% of the total of 134 information requests from the Russian government during the second half of the year of 2014. Twitter is reported that the company has rejected 108 requests whereas Facebook, on the other hand, has declined to comment on the two requests that the company received last year.

As the three companies use encryption protocols to prevent the Russian’s agency to block specific sites, the only option that they have is to block the sites entirely. Ampelonsky, Roskomnadzor’s spokesperson mentioned that the agency realized that the three companies were registered under U.S. jurisdiction, however, the three companies should demonstrated equal respect to national legislation and if they did not, then the agency would need to apply for sanctions. There is no further information what the sanctions will be.

Piper Jaffray releases this survey twice a year and it is closely watched on Wall Street. Companies use the findings to get an idea about teens’ spending pattern and brand preferences while investors use them for making their stock buying decisions.

Survey results released by Pew Research Center tell a different story. Their survey found Facebook to still be the top choice of teenagers with 71% teens aged between 13 and 17 using it. 52% of them used Instagram and 41% used Snapchat.

Additional details about HTC One M9 camera sensor and SoC clock speed leaked

HTC’s new flagship One M9 which is going to be unveiled on March 1 at the MWC in Barcelona, has seen numerous leaks up till now. Just recently we saw its renders, specs and other details leaked. Now a new leak has emerged, this time from Twitter that gives some additional details about the HTC One M9 specs.

According to the leaks, the new HTC flagship is supposed to have an improved 20MP rear camera. Spigen’s HTC One M9 cases appearing for pre-order on Amazon also confirmed it. Now this new tip by Roland Quandt claims “filling in the blanks” for the said phone regarding its 20MP camera. According to him, the camera will feature f/2.2 aperture and 27.8 mm lens. This means that the camera might not be Sony’s 20MP snapper that has been used in smartphones such as Xperia Z3 and Meizu MX4, but may be of some other make.

Another leakster Ricciolo tipped PhoneArena that the camera sensor in One M9 is made by Toshiba which is another big surprise from HTC after the huge 5X jump in its camera compared to One M8. This reliable tippster claims that the size of the camera sensor is 1/2.4” which is a little smaller than Sony’s.

Roland Quandt has also confirmed that the HTC One M9 will be powered by the latest Qualcomm Snapdragon 810 SoC. It will have 4 cortex-A57 cores clocked at 2GHz and 4 cortex-A53 clocked at 1.5GHz. The new HTC phone will run Android 5.0.2 with the company’s own Sense 7 UI on top.

Well, we will know for sure in a few days as the MWC 2015 is just round the corner.

Abuse Statements in Twitter Would be Even Harder in the Future

Twitter CEO, Dick Costolo, has announced that he is going to make it difficult for abuser to post statements that is abusing other users in Twitter in the future. Furthermore, he added that he is going to take personal responsibility for the poor handling of abusing statements by Twitter during his tenure as CEO and pledged to do better in the future.

Costolo outlined a plan eventhough it is not in detail that he is going to make it easier to ban people from Twitter and ensure that abusive statements harder to aim directly to any users which can dominate their timelines.

The current reporting process of harassment or abuse in Twitter is that the users who received the abuse statements will have to report the abuse and the account is suspended. However, the owner of the suspended account can just open up a new account and repeat the whole process again. Costolo plans to reverse this process so that it is going to be difficult to be an abuser and makes it harder for the abusive statements to be posted on the platform.

Costolo said “The way I would frame it is people should have a right to speak freely on the platform, but you don’t necessarily have a right to have your mentions of me show up in my mentions timeline with whatever you choose to say, and your response is that I can call you whatever I want to call you. I think that’s one way to think about it. I generally have the right to speak freely on the platform, but I don’t have the right to have whatever nasty things I want to say about you show up in your mentions.

Google and Twitter Reaches Deal to Show Tweets on Google Search Results

Google and Twitter has reached an agreement which allows Google to access to Twitter’s data stream. Twitter is a microblogging site for about 284 million users. Prior to this agreement, Google had to crawl the Twitter’s site for information whereas after this agreement, the data is ready immediately.

From this agreement, tweets from Twitter will be visible for non Twitter user and thus generating more advertising revenue from wider internet users. On top of that, Twitter also provides data to Microsoft Corp’s Bing search service and Yahoo! Inc, hoping to draw in more users as the growth of Twitter is slowing down during the last few years.

Google and Twitter has similar deal from 2009 to 2011. However, Ali Rowghani, the Chief Operating Officer of Twitter during that period did not want to renew the agreement as to have more control to the Twitter’s content. However, it does not work according to plan.

Twitter stock increased 4.2 percent to $42.45 at 7:03am New York time, which increased 14 percent this year.

There is no advertising revenue from this Twitter and Google agreement. Twitter will receive data-licensing revenue which is total up to $41 million in the third quarter, up from $16 million on previous year.

A privacy flaw in Twitter enables third parties to read your direct messages and also send new ones

Many websites and mobile apps let you use your Twitter account to log in to them as it makes the registration process simple and easy. However, due to a privacy flaw in Twitter, these third parties can get access to your direct messages in Twitter.

A search marketing consultant Rishi Lakhani observed this flaw when he was using his Twitter account to sign up with Inbound, a digital marketers’ forum. At the time of login, he got a warning that Inbound will be able to read his direct messages.

Lakhani demonstrated this flaw to Business Insider on a Twitter account created by them. Although he did not have its password, he was able to alter the profile of the account and also receive and send direct messages.

Many websites or apps use the Twitter API (Application Program Interface) to create an auth. login so that the user doesn’t need to sign up separately. When a developer creates a ‘login’ with Twitter access, he has to allow one of the following three permissions to the website or app.

  • Read Only

  • Read Write

  • Read Write DM

This can be seen in the screenshot below:

Twitter-user-permission-access

Now, if a developer chooses the third option for his site, he would be able to read direct messages of the user who logs in. This option may expose the user to “snooping and spamming.”

This is what the authorization screen will look like:

 Auth-Screen

Twitter has over 284 million active users and thousands of companies allow login to their apps and websites through Twitter. As Lakhani says in his website:

A clever spammer could use this tool to their advantage, as it allows some real control over an accounts actions. For example, by time noting user activity, it could be possible to use the account to tweet links for traffic etc when the user is least likely to be using the account, and then delete them. the same goes for DMs.

You’ll get Tweets from people you don’t follow, Twitter thinks you’ll enjoy them

Twitter has announced that some tweets from people you don’t follow will be included in your timeline in a bid to make your Twitter experience more relevant. Twitter has been experimenting and tweaking the timelines for some time now and based on this, the popular social network has decided to make it a standard feature for all accounts.

A couple of months back some users started getting tweets from people they didn’t follow because some person they followed had favourited them. Trevor O’Brien of Twitter says in his blog post, “There are times when you might miss out on Tweets we think you’d enjoy. To help you keep up with what’s happening, we’ve been testing ways to include these Tweets in your timeline — ones we think you’ll find interesting or entertaining.

He further adds,”Testing indicated that most people enjoy seeing Tweets from accounts they may not follow, based on signals such as activity from accounts you do follow, the popularity of the Tweets, and how people in your network interact with them. These experiments now inform the timeline you see today.

Twitter support writes,”You will sometimes see Tweets from accounts you don’t follow. We select each Tweet using a variety of signals, including how popular it is and how people in your network are interacting with it. Our goal is to make your home timeline even more relevant and interesting.

Some people may not like this move from Twitter. In fact, many have already begun to express their displeasure at the change. Twitter’s own tweet about this move drew a lot of negative responses like:

“please no “,“ew stop that”, “please stop ruining your product”, “please don’t.” “Aka start getting used to forced Ads in your timeline.” “plz dont if I wanted their tweets I would follow them.”, “Where do I opt out of this, or anything close to this, FOREVER.” and many more.

Of course, it is possible that Tweeple may welcome this move once they get they used to it. What do you think about Twitter’s latest move?

Twitter Shopping arrives with the new “Buy Now” button

Twitter’s Shopping integration finally turns out to be real deal as the social networking giant has launched a new “Buy Now” button that has surfaced in past few days. However, for the moment you will see only the button, pressing which might not take any action but the full implementation of this feature is expected to to appear soon along with Fancy. This is as such an unfinished feature at the moment and will appear of Twitter’s Mobile app but will help to buy for few legitimate products via tweets.

Back in May, Amazon had joined hands with Twitter where users could add products to their shopping cart directly via Tweets. Now this new feature with “Buy Now” could be brought here as well along with Fancy listings. Twitter has as such a good association with e-commerce applications and the social networking giant has recently hired a former CEO Nathan Hubbard to exclusively look after the company’s commerce ventures. We hope this new exciting new feature comes to actual practice sooner.

The teaser pic shows the side view of a slim Sony handset and a red dressed girl standing next to it. The focus is on the phone, while the girl’s image is blurred. The phone is quite big and its power, volume and camera buttons can be seen. Sony has posted the following comment along with the photo:

Sony_Next big thing-1

The blurred image indicates that it is a “secret”, that it is not clearly known yet, but that the image will become clear soon, so “stay tuned”. The use of words “next big thing” suggests the teaser may well be for the successor to big Xperia Z Ultra. It might be called the Xperia Z2 Ultra or the Xperia Z Ultra 2. Some believe the teaser might be for Xperia Z3, but since the Xperia Z2 has been launched just a few months back, this seems a remote possibility.

Anyway, hopefully the secret will be out soon. Meanwhile, let us know what you think the teaser is about. The pic has generated a lot of interest and speculation for sure!
