Xiaomi becomes world’s third largest Smartphone manufacturer

Chinese smartphone maker Xiaomi has become the third largest smartphone manufacturer in the world according to the latest data released by IDC for the third quarter of 2014. Preliminary data released for the last quarter (July-September) throws up some interesting information. Xiaomi has overtaken LG and Lenovo and jumped to third position even though the company focused only on China and adjacent markets.

Xiaomi’s market share in Q3 of 2013 was just 2.1% which surged to 5.3% in Q3 of 2014 registering a growth of 211.3%, taking it to third spot, trailing behind only Apple and Samsung. Xiaomi shipped 17.3 million smartphone units in the third quarter of this year compared to just 5.6 million units during the same period last year.

Top Smartphone Vendors Q3 2014

Samsung retains its top ranking in Q3 2014 with shipments of 78.1 million smartphones and a market share of 23.8%. Against this, Apple which is at second position, shipped 39.3 million smartphones during the period and had a market share of 12.0%, almost half that of Samsung. However, if we compare Samsung’s this year’s figures with those of last year, its market share has declined quite a bit from 32.5% in Q3 of 2013 to 23.8% in Q3 of 2014, while the share of Apple has dropped only marginally and the company has actually shipped 5.5 million more units this last quarter.

Shipments and market shares of Lenovo and LG have also increased but they couldn’t compete with the Xiaomi Juggernaut and their rankings fell. If we see overall, there were 65.9 million more smartphones shipped in this year’s Q3 as compared to that of last year.

Xiaomi, which is called the Apple of China, entered the smartphone market only about four years back but has progressed quite rapidly even though it sells its products in China and a few nearby countries such as Singapore, India, Taiwan, Malaysia and Hong Kong only .

In February this year, Xiaomi entered the list of top ten best selling smartphones. Then news came that it had surpassed Apple in China to become the second largest smartphone company in the country only behind Samsung. Then according to Canalys, Xiaomi even overtook Samsung in China in Q2 of 2014 becoming the topmost smartphone vendor in the country.

ARM Released New Mali-T800 GPU Family

It has been a year since ARM unveiled two new members to the Mali family, Mali-T720 and Mail-T760. This year, the company unveiled their successors along with a third GPU design plus two other media related processors. The five new media processors are: the Mail-T820 GPU, the Mali-T830 GPU, the Mail-T860 GPU, the Mali-V550 video recorder and the Mali DP-550 display processor.

ARM’s Media Processing Division works with over 60 partners who most of them have 100 Mali licenses to integrate Mali-GPUs and other Mali processors into System-on-a-Chip (SoC) design along with ARM based CPUs. Currently, Mali is the number one GPU used on Android devices and ARM’s partner shipped over 400 million chips with Mali GPUs during 2013.

Mali-T860 is built on top of the previous generation of Mali-GPUs and consists the same number as Mali-T760. The difference is that T860 includes bandwidth reduction technologies which in fact this feature also found in T820 and T830 too. T820 and T830 is very similar. The only difference is that T830 has two ALU(Arithmetic Logic Unit) cores per shader whereas T820 only has one. The difference T820/T830 with T860 is that T820/T830 supports DirectX 11 FL9_3 and not DirectX 11.1 which is hardly an issue for Android users.

Mali-V550 is the first ARM video decoder which includes HEVC hardware encoding and decoding in single code which can handle full HD (1080p) at 60fps. Mali DP550 is the new display driver which can bring energy efficiency processing all the way to the glass.

MediaTek to come up with two octa-core 64-bit chipsets in 2015

Earlier this year, there were rumors that chip making giant MediaTek is likely to come up with 4G enabled chipsets. Well, the company seems to be all set to compete with its rival Qualcomm that is standing at the top of the chipset industry with most flagship smartphones having its Snapdragon processing chipsets. The company is also set and geared up for its roadmap of 2015 and is most likely to come up with its two new powerful octa-core SoCs.

One of these chipsets would be MediaTek’s new 64-bit MT6753 and this is likely to arrive in the H2 of 2015. This is probably a successor to the current company top-end octa-core MT6752 Soc. This new offering is likely to sport eight Cortex A53 cores however their clock rate would be little lower as compared to the existing MT6572’s 1.7GHz, where four of its cores would be running at 1.5GHz and the remaining four at 1.3GHz. This new chipset is believed to be having an similar Mali T760 GPU aboard with the same earlier Image signal processor along with a 16MP camera support.

This new MT6753 octa-core chipset is said to have an added support for more 3G/4G bands along with a CDMA2000 1x and EVDO Rev A. this chipset would also arrive with its own toned-down version the MT6753M that would support qHD displays with 540×960 pixel resolution and up to 8MP of camera. Both these chipsets are believed to come up at the mid-range levels where MediaTek holds a strong dominance currently in the market. Well, is currently not clear whether these new chipset would be running the latest Android 5.0 Lollipop or not, but that can be quite very well expected.

The device has  2GB of RAM and 16GB of internal storage. OppoR5-4

Motorola DROID Turbo goes official with jaw-dropping specs and heavy duty battery

Well, after all the hush-hush, press renders and many other rumors, the Motorola DROID Turbo is finally official and needless to say the device comes with some very promising and heavily loaded specs. This is the second premier smartphone from the Motorola camp within a month, after Google announced its flagship Motorola designed Nexus 6 a fortnight ago. Let us discuss every aspect of the premium handset in detail.

Design and Display

The Motorola DROID Turbo stays to the 5inch segment unlike the phablet segment which Google has recently ventured into! Design wise, the Motorola DROID Turbo has very similar design pattern to its earlier DROID handsets and seems to have a hair-line difference from the DROID MAXX.

The Motorola DROID Turbo offers a metalized rear cover with a Kevlar build, as found in most of the DROID line of handsets. Moreover, the device has also got an metal frame clad in the Metallized Glass Fiber which offers more sturdiness to the device simultaneously making it more durable and light-weight. Machine Power and Software

Just like the Samsung Galaxy Note 4, the DROID Turbo too has the most powerful Qualcomm Snapdragon 805 APQ8084 chipset to its heart clocked at a whopping 2.7GHz and supported by a Adreno 420 GPU clocked at 600MHz. The device also comprises of an NLP (Natural Luggage Processor) on board.

The front-facing video chatting camera is 2MP allowing to capture 1080p videos.

Battery beyond bars

Falling just short of the 4000mAh battery capacity, the device hosts a whopping 3900mAh of battery capacity and Motorola claims it to be easily for two long days. This is certainly a part of achievement from Motorola to pump this huge a battery in 5.2 inch device. The listing was spotted by a Russian site hi-tech.mail. As per the catalog, the dual-SIM version will be dubbed as Samsung Galaxy A5 Duos LTE (SM-A500) and it appears to be a pricey handset costing KZT 99,990 in Kazakhstan, which translates to about $552 or €435. According to earlier reports the Galaxy A5 was supposed to cost between $400 and $450.

Specs include a 5-inch Super AMOLED HD display with 720p resolution, Qualcomm Snapdragon 400 chipset with a quad-core 1.2GHz CPU, 1GB of RAM and 16GB of internal memory with a microSD card slot for memory expansion. Samsung has not yet announced the date when it will be unveiling the trio of Galaxy A3, A5 and A7 smartphones. The catalog is valid up to November 11 so we can expect the company make an announcement before then.

Apple Wants To Take NFC Beyond Apple Pay

Google tried to implement NFC through Android but it seems that they were not particularly successful with its implementation. Now, rumor has it that Apple is preparing to use Apple Pay for more than just NFC payments. They are scouting for partnerships to increase the span of NFC payments via the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus. The payment API is not available to third-parties so Apple Pay can only be used through designated locations right now.

Apple has plans for NFC that go beyond Apple Pay - 2 - DoiToshin

Apple is trying to implement the NFC chip for security, and even things like public transit tickets. They have been in talks with HID Global and Cubic who make secure building access systems that are activated using keycards.

The Apple representatives have talked to technology providers like HID Global and Cubic, which enable secure access to buildings and transit fare systems, respectively, said people briefed on the discussions. Spokespeople for the companies declined to comment about any discussions with Apple, but executives there discussed how they could integrate their systems with the iPhone.

A partnership with Starwood Hotels has already been announced as well. Hotel users can replace their keycards with the Apple Watch which uses bluetooth rather than NFC.

Cook said mobile payments had failed so far because they were built to serve the business models of their creators, rather than to provide a useful experience for customers. (source: Bloomberg)

There has been some backlash from merchants but Apple is going forward with Apple Pay. It is clear that they want this to be a big part of everyday life.

The handset was exclusively made for one of the Japanese carriers KDDI and had very thin bezels of just 1.15mm thickness. The LG Isai Fl was the first handset to have a Quad-HD display with a 500ppi pixel density. The device was announced just few months back and now LG and KDDI have come out with a refreshed version of the device namely the LG Isai VL.

Looking to its specs, the device comes with a 5.5inch Quad HD display having an excellent pixel density of 534 pii. Well, there are even few areas wherein the VL Isai model surpasses the FL model such as the RAM and the call making capabilities. The Isai FL model offers 2GB of RAM whereas this VL model offers 3GB of RAM. The LG Iasi VL model is considered as the first VoLTE enabled devices in Japan and is even water and dust proof.

With the LG G3 being this hit in the market, everyone’s eyes would be now on its successor LG G4 which could possibly have some similar specs as that compared to the recently launched LG Isai VL. This device is said to be exclusively available in Japan only.

HTC Sense 7 screenshots with Material Design leaked

Back in June at the Google I/O Conference when Google declared its Android 5.0 with Material Design, Taiwan based handset maker HTC promised an update for its flagships HTC One M8 and One M7 within 90 days of Google offering them the source code. With the latest Android OS Lollipop that would be started rolling-out from next week, we can expect this update to hit HTC device at the start of next year. There is no doubt to it that this 64-bit Os architecture would arrive with HTC Sense. With all this, we have received the first screenshots from one of the test HTC One M8 running the Android Lollipop that is topped up the HTC Sense 7 interface.

The new Android Lollipop offers a very clean and flat look for its apps and menus which can be compared with Optimus UI from LG with minimal flatter looks and is very user-friendly. Well, there is quite a large amount of possibility of HTC making efforts to match up its Sense UI looks that are in accordance to the Material Design. Well, for the time being we have the below two screenshots for the same.

Apple’s iPhone 6 Topped Presales Figure in South Korea

Apple’s iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus has been opened for pre-order since Friday, 24 October 2014, by three mobile carriers in South Korea. In less than an hour, the carriers reported that the figure has topped the reported pre-sales figure of Samsung Galaxy Note 4 which launched in September.

The first telecom company, KT Corp, claims that the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 plus models together sold up to 10,000 orders in one minute and 50,000 orders in thirty minutes while LG Uplus received 20,000 orders for the new iPhones within 20 minutes. It is the first time that LG Uplus selling iPhone in the local market. South Korea’s largest telecom company, SK Telecom, on the other hand, declined to comment on the detail. However, the company confirmed that the first and second batch of presale orders for iPhones have been fully booked. The iPhones will be made available on the store shelves and for customers starting on 31 October 2014.

Analysts estimated that about 100,000 units have been ordered by now.  it beats Galaxy Note 4 as it had only 30,000 units sold within the first 3 days after it has been launched. However, it seems like it is a little bit unfair to compare these two figures since Samsung has only given 10,000 units to the same three network operators for pre-order purposes whereas Apple seems to give the companies quite a bit of its unit to pre-sell.

Samsung Knox is Rumored to be lacked behind iOS in Enterprise Security.

About 85% of the smartphone nowadays are running on Android.  The latest version of Android, Android 5.0 Lollipop is a big release for Google’s mobile OS. It comes with UI overhaul, a number of reworked features and a few of additional new features. Among these new apps is Knox.

Knox is known to be installed in Samsung Galaxy. One of the examples of Samsung model which is using Knox is the Samsung Galaxy S4. As in the advertisement for Samsung, explaining about Knox is that it is a container which improves the user experience, providing security for enterprise data by creating secure zone in the employee’s device for corporate applications.  The enterprise data is encrypted either at rest or in motion. KNOX workspace container provides users with an isolated secure environment within mobile device, complete with its own home screen, launcher, applications and widgets for easier, more intuitive and safe operation. Application and data inside the container are separated.

Knox is approved by the US Department of Defence and by NSA recently. However, an “unnamed researcher” claims to have found where KNOX keeps its security PIN in an insecure place. It is stored in the plain text file named pin.xml.

Responding to this finding, Samsung has responded with a blog post, denying that it is easy to access the PIN. It is only a trusted system processes which is able to retrieve the PIN and in the event of any system compromise, KNOX Trusted Boot will lock down the container key store.

Some says that Android Security lacks behind iOS security. Which one should we trust? Only extensive testing will answer that.

FireTube Could Be Your New YouTube Music Player

We heard rumors back in August that there will be a new music subscription service from Youtube. The rumored name of this service was “YouTube Music Key”. It was supposed to be an ad-free subscription based service costing $9.99 a month. But that was just a rumor.

Since then, nothing has been officially revealed by Google about this product. The closest thing that we could find was the third-party-app in the Google Play app store. It is a YouTube music player for Android and its name is FireTube. This app is made to allow you to “listen to any song, any time, any where.”. Its UI design is easy to navigate and it looks like a typical music player.

Its feature list includes “the largest database of music available.”as proclaimed by the makers of the FireTube app. This app can play music in the background, allowing you to do other things while it plays the songs from YouTube. “Hot Tracks” lets you lets you play the latest tunes. “Automatic Queue” does what it says, it builds a queue of music videos for you to listen to. The playlist that you make in this app can be synced with the same app running on other Android devices and even the Mozilla browser. The playlists can be imported to other devices. And, to top it all off you can watch music videos instead of just listening to them as well.

This app should be available on the Google Play Store right now.

Sundar Pichai appointed as Google’s new Products Business Head

In a significant move, Internet Giant Google’s CEO Larry Page has made Indian-born Sundar Pichai the head of the company’s products business. Although no official press release has been issued yet, an internal memo has been sent by Google to its staff informing about the change, according to Re/code.

Sundar Pichai, Senior Vice President at Google looking after Android, Chrome and Google apps, has now been made in-charge of all the products except one at the company. He will now oversee search, Google+, maps, commerce, ad products, research and infrastructure in addition to his existing portfolio.  Only YouTube will remain with its CEO Susan Wojcicki who is a top executive with Google and it was in her garage that Larry Page and Sergey Brin started Google. She will be reporting directly to Page. All the other executive heads will now report to Sundar Pichai.

This move came because Larry Page was concerned that in the coming years Google may not be as innovative as before and he wanted to make certain changes so that bottlenecks are removed and he will get more time to focus on the “Bigger Picture”. Page will now focus his attention on other existing and new products. He will continue to keep with him access and energy, corporate development, Google X, Nest, Calico, finance, legal and business (including ad sales).

Sundar Pichai, 42, joined Google in 2004 and has risen rapidly in the company over the years. He was managing Chrome and was given Google apps in 2012 when Dave Girouard left. Then Andy Rubin stepped down as Android head in 2013 and that too went to Pichai. Sundar Pichai came in limelight at the Google’s I/O 2014 conference. With this new responsibility, he is practically at number two position in the company and considered by many as a potential CEO. However, according to sources, Pichai’s elevation is not aimed at grooming him to take over the reins from Page in future.

Interesting Hidden Menu Option on Samsung Galaxy Smartphones

There are pieces of code which have been embedded as part of computer software since long time ago without us as users know about it. Normally the pieces of code will surface when a specific set command was given. In this blog, we are going to show a piece of code which hidden in Samsung Galaxy smartphones. The secret screen is used to check whether the device is in good working condition.

So, how to access this secret menu?  Well, you can access the screen by opening the Phone app and entering the code *#0*# and when you enter the last symbol, the secret screen will automatically appear.

Most of the option in the secret menu is not really interesting. It seems like this menu is developed for testing purposes. There are 21 menu options altogether. For example, there is “Red”, “Green”, “Blue” and “Black” which allows you to check the screen’s output for flaws like the stuck pixels or color irregularities.

When you click on “Sensor”, it will display a cool-looking screen where raw data from your phone’s sensors will be displayed. On top of that there are graphs showing readings from your accelerometer, gyroscope, and compass. If you click on “Image Test”, a Chihuahua picture will be shown, which is quite funny in a way.

Therefore, those are some examples of what you can find in the hidden menu on Galaxy handsets. Please try the rest if you have time and at your own risk obviously. If you want to share your findings, please leave us a comment!

The Biggest Issue of Smartwatch is About to Solve, Thanks to Samsung’s New Flexible Battery

Situation of smartwatches

Smartwatches is a product that most people do not find interesting at the moment. People write about them a lot though the device is not popular. It is still believed that the development of smartwatches is moving in the right direction, and they will become as important as a smartphone in future.

The “flexibility” factor

Currently there are different issues with smartphones and smartwatches. Something that really needs to be understood is the flexibility. It is something that can really change the design of smart products for a certain period of time. The idea of flexible smart products was considered to be possible when people came to know about graphene. It is an exceptional product that has everything to fix what is wrong with the smart products. It can be used to make a very thin, flexible and long-lasting battery. Before this scientists also started working on flexible screens. Now when there is a hope that both flexible screens and flexible batteries will be possible to manufacture, it will enable companies to make flexible smartphones in the future. Those flexible mobile phones could be folded or rolled up.

flexible battery

The present level of flexibility

So far people have not seen anything like a flexible smartphone though engineers are working to get there. Products like Samsung Galaxy Note Edge, Samsung Galaxy Round and LG G Flex have flexible screens, but they are slightly flexible.  The flexibility level of Samsung Galaxy Round and LG G Flex is limited. The objective of their flexibility is to give user a better grip or a better viewing angle. Both of them cannot be bended to any desired level.

Flexible battery

It is impossible to make a flexible smartphone without having a flexible battery. Samsung made an announcement that they have achieved this. It is claimed that this battery remains fully functional even if it is rolled up. However, it does not mean that there will be flexible smartphones in the market soon. The main use of flexible batteries is going to be in a less important gadget that is smartwatches. At the moment smartwatches have a very short battery life, and the situation will be totally different after the addition of flexible batteries.

Present smartwatch

Not long ago, there was a discussion on the advantages of the Pebble Smartwatch. Despite the fact that it has the least features among all the smartwatches available, there is one thing that makes it unique from all others. Its battery will last for at least seven days. Majority of smartwatches usually last for 3 days, and sometimes for 4 days. Sometimes they last for even more than 4 days if the user does not use any of its features for which he has paid a good amount of money. Now Samsung is going to put this flexible battery in the wristband of the smartwatch which will extend the battery life for significant amount of time.

New smartwatch

It can be said that the coming changes in smartwatches will benefit Samsung. Due to longer battery life, companies especially Samsung will sell smartwatches for more than $250. As a result, users will be able to enjoy all features for a longer time.

Future prospects

There are people who like their smartwatches the way they are; however, most people do not buy the device due to short battery life.  Time will decide if longer battery life will convince more people to buy a smartwatch.

Sony may launch a new 12-inch Tablet in Q1 of 2015

Sony Mobile is rumored to be working on a large 12-inch tablet, which it is planning to launch in the first quarter (Jan-March) of 2015. This hint has come from supply chain makers in Taiwan. According to sources, this will be a high-end tablet with a stylus and will be primarily meant for graphics. This means that the tablet will cater to a niche market.

Unfortunately, no other details about the tablet are known as yet but since it will be high-end, it will have a high resolution screen and a great processor. If it is made a part of the Xperia family, it will have a thin water proof body.

Apparently several other mobile manufacturers are also planning to come out with big size tablets next year. Although the demand for larger sized tablets is expected to be moderate, the vendors are keen to enter this market segment.

Sony had recently unveiled the small sized Xperia Z3 Tablet Compact at the IFA. Currently, Sony’s largest Tablet is the Xperia Z2 Tablet having a 10.1-inch touch screen. Other large-sized tablets available in the market are Samsung Galaxy Note Pro with a 12.2-inch display and Microsoft Surface Pro 3 having a display of 12 inches. Apple is reportedly working on a new huge 12.9-inch tablet that will be powered by A8X chipset.

Sony is expected to unveil its new 12-inch tablet at either the CES or the MWC in 2015 possibly along with its next flagship, the Xperia Z4.

Google Keeps Options Open for Android Wear to be Cross-Platform

Android Wear is normally referring to a wearable device which provides you with information when you are on the move.  One of the trending wearable devices currently is the smartwatches. Smartwatches sometimes are platform specific device and it is limited. For example, Tizen smartwatches is only working with Samsung Android devices.  One of the common usages for Android Wear is for the fitness tracker segment. Some smartwatches even allows the users to receive or reply notifications or messages by using voice command.

Since there is news recently that Google has made Google Glass compatible with iOS, many wondered whether Google could bring Android Wear compatible with iOS also in the near future. Android Wear product manager Jeff Chang is not ruling out it either.

“We always want as many users as possible to enjoy our experience, so in terms of enabling more people to use Android Wear we’re very interested in making that happen” Said Jeff Chang.

Well, that statement itself hinted a possibility of it happen but we are also not sure when it is going to happen. It sounds like the Android Wear team will seriously thinking about how to make that happen. Well, let us just hope so!

Reports show that some retailers are not very keen on supporting Apple Pay

There is a lot hype created with the Apple’s recently launched Pay system Apple Pay these days. However, it seems that its certainly not going to be cake walk for Apple to establish this method in mobile. This is because recently a number of very high profile retailers like BestBuy, Rite Aid and Walmart have announced that they would not support this latest creation from the Cupertino giant.

Some merchants have even disabled or modified the NFC readers in their stores to shut out the Apple Pay. The reason behind all these is said to be the Current C which is a payment system backed by some of the retail heavy-weights that aims to cut off credit or debit card processing fees by directly taking the money from user’s bank. The CurrentC is all set to be launched next year and would have a dedicated app for iOS and Android. Apart from just being a payment platform, this app would also serve as a platform for retailers in order to offer promotions to consumers.

There is a big list of CurrentC backers that includes Walmart, Kmart, Sears, Bad and Beyond and other US gas station chains. We don’t know how far would CurrentC be a success but for the time being it has certainly raised worries for Apple and pitched in a new competition ahead.

Apple to Rebuild Beats and Integrate It Inside iTunes

Since Apple has acquired Beats by Dr Dre earlier this year, the tech giant company is planning to rebuild Beats Music and integrate it into iTunes by next year. This movement is done in the hope to bring up Apple’s iTunes service sales which is currently declining. The revenue from the service is down 13 to 14 percent this year until the moment when this article was posted. It is a big jump compared with the 2.1 percent decline in the previous year.

It is not confirmed whether there will be a free streaming option offered when it is re-launches. Beats Music is priced at $10 monthly, with no ad-supported business model like Spotify. Beats has also recently launched an Apple TV channel and released a “Listen Now” integration with Shazam.

Before the acquisition by Apple, Beats is making headphones, therefore, that was one area whereby we expect this movement would help Apple. However, while integration with iTunes would makes sense, Steve Job’s biographer Walter Isaacson mentioned that Beats will be exploring possibility to be video content providers.

The official announcement could come as soon as in the first half of 2015. We are excited but we only can wait and see.

However, it is still not clear as to when we would get to see the first Microsoft Lumia device in the market. Probably, if Microsoft doesn’t surprise us before this Christmas, we can expect Microsoft to make announcements at the CES in January or either the MWC in February next year.

Project Ara from Google to have its dedicated store for modular bits

Well, it seems that Google is gearing up with modular concept smartphone Project Ara and as the expected 2015 release of the Project is getting closer with every passing day, we are getting more and more insight into the Project. Recently at the Prude University, team leader Paul Eremenko said that Ara components would have its special store that would be dedicated modular hardware for the Project.

Paul also said that the Ara MDK would be free and open and would easily be available to all. This means that anyone would be able to create a module. Just like various developers across the globe can easily put their apps on Play Store for Android, module developers for Ara would be able to easily put their hardware on the dedicated marketplace for this project. This would allow various module makers across the globe to directly sell their products to consumers as Google desires.

Well this would certainly prove to be very fruitful platform both for developers and consumers and it would be interesting to see different hardware modules during launch of the marketplace. Just for your information, the Project Ara was initiated by Motorola however, after sold to Lenovo Google has still managed to keep to themselves. The basic price for the modular handset is said to be $50.
