Asus Teases Its Zenwatch Launch For September 3

ASUS took to their Facebook page to share a little sketched glimpse of their upcoming Zenwatch, a smartwatch to be launched at IFA in Berlin on 3rd September.

The image tells a few aspects to the smartwatch that are of little surprise at this stage. We can expect at least a partial metal build while terms like ‘sand blasted’ and ‘polish’ imply a raw metal look with a premium metal feel, but that is perhaps a stretch for this simple drawing.

Perhaps the best feature to the new ASUS Zenwatch will be the curvature to the device. Devices like the LG G Watch come with a flat back, leaving the unit to protrude uncomfortably for users with smaller wrists. The curvature of the ASUS watch should make for a more comfortable fit for users of any wrist size.

These truly are exciting times for wearables of the smartwatch variants. LG has been teasing their new smartwatch, only just recently releasing a video that confirms it will have a rounded watch face. Motorola’s long awaited Moto 360 is expected to launch the day after ASUS as well. Best Buy accidentally went live with their listing of the Moto 360 last week, they quickly took the Moto 360 back down, but not before we got all the specs and learned that it would sell for $250.

We are eagerly awaiting some solid specs and pricing information for the ASUS Zenwatch. We have been hearing rumors of ASUS keeping their Android Wear powered offering priced well below that of the competition, with conversation heading as low as $100. Certainly $100 would be a attraction that many users could afford to take the plunge into wearables, but we’ll have to wait to see.

Stay tuned, IFA is looking like it will bring a ton of new devices to marketplace, and we plan to be there to bring you all the details. Are these teaser snapshots getting you excited for ASUS’ new Zenwatch?

Xiaomi to launch premium edition smartphones with sapphire materials

Chinese smartphone maker Xiaomi has tapped South Korean manufacturers to produce sapphire glass screens for a limited edition of premium Smartphone, which is expected to be launched at the end of this year.

The report, citing no sources, said Xiaomi had ordered sapphire covers for its 50,000 smartphones. Xiaomi declined to comment on this.

Sapphire is more durable and scratch-resistant than typical glass display covers. Industry giant Apple Inc is also using sapphire screens in more expensive models of its new, bigger premium edition iPhones.

Xiaomi is known for rolling out a device with design specifications similar to Apple’s, such as bevelled edges. The Beijing-based manufacturer’s marketing strategy has often been to position its Mi line as equal to the iPhone in quality but at one-third the price.

Last November, Apple announced to cooperate with GT Advanced Technologies Inc, and established factory in Arizona, to make sapphire materials for its prevalent electronics devices. It is estimated that the sapphire glass displays produced will be used for iPhone 6.

Recently, Verizon unveiled the Kyocera Brigadier, which is the first smartphone in the U.S. to come with a sapphire glass screens. The smartphone “is virtually scratchproof and protects from a screen-first drop onto rocks, where tests show it less likely to break than strengthened touch-panel glass,” according to both Verizon and Kyocera. Although the use of sapphire glass, this happens to be a mid-range smartphone with a 4.5 inch display featuring a 720 x 1280 resolution, powered by a quad-core 1.4GHz Snapdragon 400.

Using sapphire glass for some of its displays would match perfectly in character for Xiaomi, which is acknowledged as the “Apple” of China.

The user will have to log in manually for the first time and enable the ‘Sign in using fingerprints’ feature. The Galaxy Note 4 will remember the logging information and next time the user can can log in with just a swipe of the finger.

Samsung Galaxy S5 and Galaxy Alpha may get these additional new features via updates in due course once the Galaxy Note 4 goes official. Samsung announces curved Gear S 3G smartwatch

Samsung officially unwraps its Gear S, its billionth smartwatch device launching this year. The Gear S has a few trademarks that set it apart from the crowd, including a curved 2-inch Super AMOLED display with 360×480 resolution, and a built-in 3G modem. It can let the wearable receive notification and messages, and even make and receive calls without any smartphone involved.

The Gear S is basically a wrist-mounted smartphone, which is not something new to the industry. Samsung’s innovative strength is Tizen-powered Samsung Gear 2 and Gear Neo devices, and also has built-in Wi-Fi and Bluetooth connectivity, in addition to its cellular communication. The Gear S’s hardware design is more impressive, as we’re finally able to see displays that wrap around the contours of the wrist, rather than sticking out as a traditional flat surface.

2

On the software side, the Gear S has HERE navigation offered by Nokia, as well as Spritz speed-reading. It also contains GPS sensors, an accelerometer, gyroscope, compass, barometer, UV detection and a heart rate monitor. In terms of specifications, it’s packing 4GB of internal storage and 512MB of RAM with a dual-core 1.0 GHz processor. It has IP67 dust and water resistance, and a relatively small 300mAh battery, which Samsung promises to get it 2 days of usage under normal conditions.

Samsung is also launching the Gear Circle headset alongside the new wearable. The device pairs with a smartphone, using Bluetooth, to allow you to take calls, listen to music, and make voice commands. A vibrating alert tells you when a notification or a call is coming through, and a magnetic lock clips around the users neck when the Gear Circle is not being used.

“Samsung is leading this exciting and rapidly developing wearable category through progressive innovation. The Samsung Gear S redefines the idea of the smart wearable and the culture of mobile communication. It will let consumers live a truly connected life anywhere, anytime.”–J.K. Shin, CEO, mobile communications at Samsung.

Both the Samsung Gear S and Samsung Gear Circle will be available starting in October through the usual Samsung retail channels beginning in October. Pricing has yet to be announced. The Samsung Gear S will be available in black and white variants.

HTC Desire 820 specs, info on 2 HTC Smartwatches leaked

Taiwanese manufacturer HTC is preparing to unveil the first 64-bit Android smartphone HTC Desire 820 at the IFA 2014 beginning next week. In addition, HTC is also expected to introduce two new smartwatches in September.

HTC had recently published a teaser pic on its Weibo account saying (Translated) “We look forward to the next one first HTC is ______? and hinting that it will be the HTC 820.

HTC Desire 820-1

The above pic gives the timeline when its previous devices first introduced the new technologies. For instance, HTC was the first to use Android OS in a smartphone in 2008 (HTC Dream), first to introduce 1080p display in 2012 (HTC Butterfly), first to use f/2 in an Android smartphone primary camera in 2012 (HTC One X) and so on.

Now HTC Desire 820 would be the first Android smartphone having a Qualcomm 64-bit processor. This has been officially confirmed by the company by posting the following pic with the tagline “# World’s first 8-core 64 phone # Yes, this is the first” (translated). Interestingly, a similar pic was posted by Qualcomm two days back.

HTC Desire 820 - feature

It was earlier thought that the HTC Desire 820 will sport an octa-core Snapdragon 615 CPU. However, a new leak by @upleaks suggests that HTC’ s new Desire 820 (codename A50) will host a Qualcomm MSM8916 64 bit quad-core Snapdragon 410 chipset clocked at 1.2GHz. Other specs revealed by @upleaks include a 5.5-inch HD display, 1.5GB RAM, 8GB internal storage, 13MP primary rear camera and 8MP front-facing camera. The device will pack a 2600mAh battery.

@upleaks has also leaked information about two upcoming HTC smartwatches – HTC WWY and HTC CWZ. These names appear to be the codenames of these smartwatches. HTC WWY will sport a 1.8-inch 32 x 160p display and a 100mAh battery. It will be water resistant with IP57 certification and may also pack in a fitness tracker. It will be launched sometime in September.

The HTC CWZ is an Android Wear smartwatch that will be released in September across North America, Europe, Middle East, Africa, Japan, Brazil, Korea and Taiwan. Since both the new HTC smartwatches will allegedly be launched in September, it is quite possible that the company will announce them at the IFA.

Qualcomm gives assurance for a 64-bit Snapdragon powered handset at IFA 2014

The largest smartphone chipset maker Qualcomm today confirmed that a “Snapdragon powered multi-core 64-bit smartphone” is likely to be unveiled at the IFA 2014. However, the chipmaker did not provide much information but released a teaser image. Reports coming from the industry show that this chipset could be found in the upcoming HTC Desire 820.

Unlike the HTC Desire 510 that was announced this week with a 64-bit Snapdragon 410 processor, the HTC Desire 820 is expected to host an octa-core Snapdragon 615 CPU on-board. The Snapdragon 615 comprises of four Cortex A53 cores clocked at 1.8GHz and four Cortex A53 clocked at 1.0GHz. Now if this new chipset has to arrive with the HTC Desire 820, then we believe that to explore the capabilities of Snapdragon 615 the device should run the latest launched Android L.

If the reports are true then Gear VR will be something very rare in the market. The goggle’s front side contains mirror only with some paint-free units and some units in Samsung blue color. It is expected that the device will come mostly in blue.

Samsung Gear VR

The apps screenshots and product card have shown and confirmed that model number of the device is SM-R230 and the name of the device remains ‘Gear VR’. The VR app screenshots reveal two types of glasses which are different from each other. One is like sports glasses while other is like a scuba mask.

Asus teases with a glimpse of its smartwatch ZenWatch in a video

The smartwatch market is getting interesting with more and more companies joining in. Even as Asus prepares to unveil its first smartwatch at the IFA 2014 in Berlin to be held in the first week of September, it has teased us with video of the device. The YouTube teaser video reveals that the upcoming Asus smartwatch will be called the ZenWatch. The name matches with the company’s Zenfone series of smartphones.

About a week back, Asus had teased us with a tweet on Twitter saying that “something #Incredible” was going to happen at the #IFA2014 and had posted a picture of a watch face partially hidden in the shadows with a quote from Khalil Gibran saying “Time has been transformed and we have changed.”

Then the Taiwan-based company put out some teaser sketches of the smartwatch on Facebook with the same Khalil Gibran quote and indicating that they’ll make an appearance “@IFA BERLIN SEPT 3, 2014”.

Here’s one:

Asus ZenWatch - 1

And the second one:

Asus ZenWatch - 2

The new teaser is just a short 35 second video giving us only a shadowy glimpse of the smartwatch from which we can guess that it is slightly curved. Apart from this, no other information has been leaked about it.

However, according to a leaked report from June, the Asus ZenWatch will probably feature an AMOLED display and will run Android wear. The device is expected to be priced between $99 and $149 which is considerably less than the LG G Watch and Samsung Gear Live.

Moto X+1 likely to come with 3D display and optical zoom

The Moto X+1 is making much noise just before its official unveiling that is expected next week on September 4th. Earlier today we spotted the first press image of the device appearing on the web and now we are getting more info regarding the device.

According to a source Hellomotohk, the Moto X+1 will have a camera which will feature optical zoom. Now this would certainly be a very novel feature but we think it is surely not going to offer the 10x optical zoom as found in the latest released Samsung Galaxy K Zoom.

Another interesting piece of information that comes regarding the Moto X+1 is that the smartphone could even host a 3D display similar to the found in the recently launched Amazon Fire Phone. Well, if Motorola trends on this path, we believe that there would be some kind of sensors to unlock the gesture interaction with the phone. We expect that the upcoming Moto X+1 will inherit some of the Moto X features like Touchless Controls and Active Display.

The upcoming Samsung Galaxy Note 4 camera gets fully detailed

Well, as days for the official launch of Galaxy Note 4 are closing in, more details regarding the flagship are popping out day by day. Just after when we spotted a teaser video for the device, more details revealing few specs of the device have appeared on web. The Samsung Galaxy Note 4 camera details show the device to be packing a powerful 16MP primary camera with Sony IMX240 camera sensor having optical image stabilization.

This camera sensor is similar to what has been offered in the recently announced Samsung Galaxy S5 LTE-A. the unit is capable enough to record 4K UHD videos at 30fps. On the other hand, the camera on the front side is supposed to measure a 3.7MP secondary camera that will be able to capute images and record videos in WQHD resolution of 2560×1440 pixels. This is a considerable jump from the 2.1MP camera that is being rumored since quite long. Moreover, the camera will also have additional feature like Slide Touch as well as some gesture based method that will be able to activate the device even with screen off.

The Slide Touch feature will be activated via a built-in sensor that is supposed to be placed at the bottom right corner which will act as a dedicated camera button. 3D Manipulation Software Reveals Hidden Parts of an Object

3dphotoediting

Another breakthrough in photo editing has been made by Carnegie Mellon University. They have developed software that can be of great assistance in 3D manipulations of objects in photos.

“In the real world, we’re used to handling objects – lifting them, turning them around or knocking them over… We’ve created an environment that gives you that same freedom when editing a photo.” — Natasha Kholgade, a Ph. D student in Carniege.

That’s basically the principle this innovation is rotating into. This software would allow us to see objects in photos as we do in the real world. The software can also work into paintings and human-and-objects composition. However, as this can provide picture perfect results it is not yet as flawless. The 3D photo manipulation software has certain limits like it does not offer translucency. On the other hand, the photo results are all deemed satisfactory. And it functions only with the use of already available 3D models. It means you can use it on a lot of objects, but not on everything.

How does this work? As mentioned, it uses existing 3D models’ geometry and appearance to represent the hidden parts of an object in a photo by generating points’ correspondence to align the photo with the 3D model. Yes, the software does not reveal the actual part of the object hidden from the camera, but creates a realistic angle from the given 3D model. All the same, this is a very promising tool.

Check out this video to see closely what more this 3D manipulation software can do.
