Only 14% of teens name Facebook as the top social network

Facebook is currently the most popular social network the world over but if you ask the teens, they may say differently. A recent survey by Investment Bank Piper Jaffray finds that Facebook is losing its charm among the teens while Instagram and Snapchat are fast growing in popularity.

The survey titled “Taking Stock With Teens” in which 6,200 teens with average age of 16 were surveyed, has found that only 14% of the US teenagers regarded Facebook as the “most important social network.” This was 23% last year and 33% in 2013 indicating that Facebook is fast losing popularity among the US teenagers.

So which social network is regarded by the teens as the best? Well, the Facebook owned Instagram was chosen as the top social network by 32% of the teens while 24% chose Twitter. Facebook with 14% came at third place closely followed by Snapchat with 13%.

Piper Jaffray releases this survey twice a year and it is closely watched on Wall Street. Companies use the findings to get an idea about teens’ spending pattern and brand preferences while investors use them for making their stock buying decisions.

Survey results released by Pew Research Center tell a different story. Their survey found Facebook to still be the top choice of teenagers with 71% teens aged between 13 and 17 using it. 52% of them used Instagram and 41% used Snapchat.

Sony’s leaked Emails reveal Snapchat turned down over $3 Billion Facebook offer

Apparently, Sony’s leaked emails have revealed the whole story behind Snapchat’s rejection of Facebook’s acquisition offer of $3 billion. Last month, hackers attacked Sony Pictures Entertainment’s email system and stole massive confidential data which has leaked out this story among others.

According to Business Insider, the leaked emails suggest that the Facebook offer to Snapchat was even more than $3 billion. The information has come from emails between Snapchat’s CEO Evan Spiegel and Sony Pictures CEO Michael Lynton who is also on the board of Snapchat, and other Snapchat board members.

Malcom Gladwell sent an email to Michael Lynton asking if the company “was crazy to turn down $3 billion,” to which Lynton replied,” if you knew the real number you would book us all a suite at Bellvue.”

The leaks have also revealed an email written by another Snapchat board member Mitch Lasky saying that Snapchat CEO Spiegel would have gotten $1 billion if the Facebook-Snapchat deal had gone through.

According to the report, the email says, “Evan proposed a new deal today to Tencent and DST that includes $40MM in secondary for him and Bobby. Never told me … in fact told me the exact opposite. When I confronted him about it, he said, “well I just turned down a billion from Zuck.”

As per another email by sent by Lasky, Facebook CEO Mark Zukerberg blamed Snapchat for leaking the news about their deal to the press. It is said that Zukerberg was disappointed that the deal didn’t go through and accused Snapchat for leaking about the deal purposely to boost its fundraising efforts.

Facebook Messenger Upgraded: Now Send Short Video Messages From The App

Facebook has updated his Messenger app for all of its Android users so they can enjoy one additional special feature that wasn’t present in the app before.

Facebook messenger has now made easy to send your message to your loved ones in a video. New updated messenger allows 15 seconds of video message recording and sending. You can send the message to your friend’s list with ease as this new feature provides good time to record a video.

In addition to the new video feature, Facebook Messenger also has larger thumbs up button now. Why Facebook has increased the size of this button is not known. May be it is just an improvement to make it look good, other than that no additional purpose it features.

After the update, the version number changes to 6.0; if we see from this perspective, it seems as a big update. Above mentioned changes are the only changes that you will find after the upgrade, so don’t expect more from the app.

The update request approval will soon arrive on your android device now. But if you think it is too much late now, you can simply go to the Play Store and search for the app. Re-download it or update it to start sending 15 seconds video messages to your friends instantly.

The integration of video messaging is not the end from the company. It is expected that Facebook will soon launch a Slingshot app that will be a competition for Snapchat. Facebook accidentally published the app before time.

Snapchat Moves Beyond Selfies, Adding text and video-calling features

Popular photo messaging service Snapchat is no longer just a service to send quirky selfies.It has added two new features like sending text messages and FaceTime-like video calling to its catalog,in a Snapchat persona.

The service is known for being able to send photos and videos across that automatically disappear after a short time.To chat with a friend you simply swipe right on their name in your inbox and a chat window is pulled up. Messages are kept ephemeral, however, since they are deleted when the chat screen is closed.

But there is a new button as well at the bottom of the screen. Whenever it turns blue, it means that he/she is currently in the chat screen, reading your messages. If you hit the button, you will start a call. If the other person hits the button too, you will see both ends of the calls at the same time.

Just like when you see a snap, you need to maintain your finger on the screen to keep the video call active on your end. If you want to switch from your front-facing camera to the back camera, all you need to do is drag your thumb to the upper half of the screen.

When you are done with your call and chat, you can go back to your inbox. Whenever you do this, your chat history will be erased, staying true to the ephemeral nature of Snapchat. You can however tap on individual messages or take a screenshot to save them for later.

This is by far the simplest and most creative interface design seen for video calling and will actually make more people use the feature due to its simplicity.It remains to be confirmed whether Snapchat’s user base will appreciate these new features.
