Available for pre-order since May 21 and hitting store shelves on June 20 is Microsoft’s brand new Surface Pro 3. The device features a 12-inch 2160×1440 display, significantly larger than the preceding Surface Pro 2′s 10.6-inch screen; a new 3:2 aspect ratio; an improved stylus; an improved Type Cover; a slimmer, lighter build; and a different home button placement.
The new Surface Pro 3 weighs only 1.76lbs (798 grams), compared to the Surface Pro 2′s weight of 2lbs (907 grams). It’s also substantially thinner, measuring 0.36 inches (9.1mm) thick compared to its predecessor’s .53 inches (13.5mm). Despite the slimming down, the device packs the newest 4th Generation Haswell processors from Intel, which are said to give up to 9 hours of battery life.
The cheapest model with an i3 Core processor and a 64GB SSD will cost $799. The next step up is $999 for the i5 version with a 128GB SSD, but there are also models with i7 processors and even larger SSDs.
For those who enjoy using the Surface on their lap, Microsoft has increased the kickstand’s range so that it now dips all the way down to a 150 degree angle. The new, wider Type Cover also has more room for the keys and touchpad, as well as an improved magnetic attachment that raises the keyboard slightly near the base of the device.
The improved stylus can open up a blank document on the Surface tablet with the click of a button now, even if the Surface is in sleep mode, but there is still no spot to store the pen on the device. However, Microsoft did make room for a full-size USB 3.0 port and front- and rear-facing 5MP HD cameras.
The device is scheduled to be released on June 20, 2014 in the US and Canada only; however, this is limited to the Intel Core i5 models, with the Intel Core i3 and Intel Core i7 models releasing on August 31, 2014. By the end of August 2014, the Surface Pro 3 will be available in 26 additional markets. Consumers can try out Demo units which will land at Microsoft stores from June 6.
