A new rumor is suggesting that the production of an iPhone 6 with a 5.44 inch screen could be constrained in the coming months as prices of sapphire increase around the globe. According to sources, Apple will initially limit their first production run to 10 million units of the iPhone 6 with a 5.44 inch screen because it utilises a high quality sapphire glass coating in its display.
The report notes that Apple’s sapphire display may cost 1743 yuan ($280) in materials, which is a significant jump over the $44 estimated for the 4-inch Retina display used in the iPhone 5s. This extra expense could increase the retail price of the next generation iPhone to 8,000 yuan ($1,285), atleast in China. At the moment, the 16 GB iPhone 5S costs 5288 yuan in China ($850), whereas the beefier 64 GB variant is retailed at the price of 6888 yuan (or $1106).
This rumor corresponds with an earlier report from analyst Ming-Chi Kuo of KGI Securities, who suggested that supply constraints may force Apple to reserve the sapphire display for premium iPhone models such as the 64GB version of the 5.5-inch iPhone 6.
There’s no official word from Apple Inc. about the existence of the large screen iPhone 6, and there won’t be until its officially released. In any case, it looks like things in iOS land are starting to get big, literally, and the whole one-handed operation paradigm of Steve Jobs that led to the original iPhone, is soon going to be thrown out of the window.
