Lenovo unveils a new futuristic projector phone

Chinese handset manufacturer Lenovo has just arrived with the new futuristic projector smartphone. This concept was being showed by the company’s concept designers at the Lenovo Tech World Conference held few days back. This new projector smartphone comes with a focus-free laser projector and can turn any surface into a touchscreen.

Take a look at the promo video that shows that the handset is very good for being used as a piano, a keyboard or even a gaming screen. However, no specs for the device have been revealed and the commercial availability of the handset is also not certain.

The focus-free laser would help to project the image to any surface and at any depth and angle in order to provide an equally sharp image. This means that the handset can also be used as a projector for watching movies or presentations. Now its to be seen how the touch part of the projected image works.

Well we believe Lenovo soon to be coming out with a handset with this interesting concept. For the meanwhile watch the video below.

Lenovo’s new Magic View concept smartwatch has a ‘private’ second display

At its tech world event held in Beijing, Lenovo announced a new concept design ‘Magic View’ for its smartwatch. The Magic View concept features dual displays – the main round traditional display and the second small display below it, just above the strap. The secondary display, also called the Virtual Interactive Display (VID), offers you a new way to watch pictures and videos.

Lenovo-magic-view-concept-smarteatch-6

According to a report by Android Central who tested out the prototype of the Magic View concept watch at the event, the watch face is round like the Lenovo-owned Motorola’s Moto 360 (flat-tire cut-off, thin bezels)  and its size is the same as LG’s Watch Urbane LTE. The watch doesn’t run Android Wear but an Android-based custom software.

The VID of the concept watch is located below the main LCD panel. It looks opaque from far but when you hold it near your eye, you can see the images. Lenovo gave a demo of the VID in the prototype watch. The image clarity was quite good indoors but it can’t be said how it will fare out of doors in daylight. They also showed a 360⁰ panorama view of a stadium with sensors of the watch controlling the image motion. This view was also impressive. The only thing is you have to hold the screen right up to your eye as this is a private view which only you can see.  The optical reflection technology enables the viewers to see the images up to 20 times the size.

Well, this is only a concept smartwatch and we can’t say when it will be available to consumers. Also, how the second display impacts the smartwatch battery life remains to be seen.

Hands-on with Lenovo’s Smartwatch VIBE Band VB10 with E Ink at CES 2015

Almost all smartphone companies seem to be jumping on the wearables bandwagon with their fitness bands, health trackers and smartwatches. Lenovo doesn’t want to lag behind. Along with several laptops and PCs, the Chinese tech giant has also introduced a new wearable device, the Lenovo VIBE Band VB10 at this year’s Consumer Electronics Show.

Lenovo-VIBE-Band-VB10-1

Lenovo’s VIBE Band is quite different than other smartwatches in many ways. The first difference is its design. It is neither traditional round nor standard square in shape but is rather longish rectangular with the display almost covering your wrist. It is a 1.43-inch 296 x 128 pixels E Ink display. This makes the screen easy to read even in hash lighting conditions like sunlight and allows a long battery life of up to one week. The VB10 has a plastic front cover made to look like metal and smooth rubber straps. There are a few watch-faces you can choose from.

Lenovo-VIBE-Band-VB10-2

The VIBE Band can be integrated with your smartphone and is a fitness and activity tracker. You get various modes by pressing the button located on the side of the VIBE Band. You get data such as steps taken, distance travelled and calories burned with date and time. It also offers you features like SMS notifications (text message up to 150 characters), ignoring calls, silencing the phone’s ring and alerting you when you go too far away from your phone. However, the E Ink display keeps refreshing every time you change the menu. The band has a regular USB port on the side for battery charging.

Lenovo-VIBE-Band-VB10-3 Lenovo-VIBE-Band-VB10-4

The VIBE Band is waterproof with IPx7 certification which means it can be immersed in 3 ft. deep water for 30 minutes. So you can wear it while showering, swimming or playing water sports. The Band connects via Bluetooth to a smartphone running Android 4.4 or above. The VIBE Band offers all this functionality for just $89 and is supposed to hit the shelves internationally in April this year, but there are no plans yet for a US release.

Motorola reportedly working on Nexus 6-like DROID Phablet with Snapdragon 810 for Mid-2015 release

Motorola launched two high-end phones back-to-back in October this year. The first was the 5.9-inch Nexus 6 Phablet in collaboration with Google and the other was the 5.2-inch DROID Turbo with some awesome specs. Motorola was later acquired by Lenovo from Google. We now have rumors that Motorola is working on a better version of the Nexus 6 and will market it as a DROID Phablet that will be released next year.

According to rumors, Motorola’s new DROID Phablet will be similar to the Nexus 6 in terms of physical construction but will have much improved specifications. The device is supposed to sport a 5.9-inch Quad HD display with 1440×2560 pixels resolution just like the Nexus 6. It will however have the latest Qualcomm 64-bit Snapdragon 810 processor and 4GB RAM on board as against 32-bit Snapdragon 805 and 3GB RAM of the Nexus 6. In addition, the device will have a whopping 4000mAh battery but the camera specifications are not known. The DROID Phablet will probably run Android 5.0 Lollipop.

According to the source, the upcoming Motorola Phablet will be launched somewhere in mid-2015 through Verizon. There is also a chance that the device might not be sold as a DROID Phablet but as some other Motorola brand. Improved specs will surely make it a great device to own!

Samsung, Apple and LG are the top three smartphone vendors in Q3 of 2014, Chinese companies not far behind

According to Digitimes Research regarding the global smartphone market, Samsung, Apple and LG topped the list of global smartphone vendors in the third quarter (July-Sept.) of the current year 2014. However, Chinese companies are surging ahead in the smartphone race and it is worth noting that five out of the top 10 global smartphone vendors in the first nine months (January-September) of 2014 were Chinese suppliers.

The three companies Samsung, Apple and LG ranked topmost in the first three quarters of 2014. Chinese companies are not far behind. In Q3, Huawei is at the fourth spot, Xiaomi at fifth and Lenovo is at the seventh position. Although Xiaomi is ranked fifth globally, it tops all other vendors in terms of growth in shipments. Xiaomi has achieved an on-year shipment growth of almost 200%. On the other hand ZTE, which was quite ahead in the list in 2013, ranking eighth among the lot, is no longer in the top 10.

Samsung is leading the pack now but the same cannot be said for it in future because its business is declining. Some of its new smartphones including the Galaxy S5 didn’t do as well as expected. However, the Korean giant is developing a fresh strategy to tackle this and is also making some changes in the top management.

Apple meanwhile is showing strong growth in revenues in the last seven quarters and has posted the highest Q3 revenue ever this year. Its latest smartphones iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus have also been quite successful in the market. According to a latest rumor, Apple is working on developing a new type of camera with a two-lens system on the back camera.

Regarding LG, the company is on a high, recording 39% year-on-year growth with record 18.8 million handsets shipped during the last quarter ended September 2014. Its latest flagship, the LG G3 has done quite well, improving LGs market share. Sales and operating income in Q3 of 2014 were the highest for the company since Q3 of 2009.

Digitimes estimates that the global shipments of smartphones in 2014 will be 1,219 units showing a growth of a little less that 30% over the previous year. In 2015, the global smartphone shipments are predicted to rise by 22% and reach 1,488 billion units, major contributors to the growth being the emerging markets.

Lenovo announces S90 “Sisley”. Copies Apple in advertisement

If you thought that the practice of copying Apple was limited to mostly no-name manufacturers, then you were probably surprised to see Lenovo, the world’s third biggest handset maker by market share, chime in. We’re, of course, referring to the Lenovo “Sisley” S90, a shameless copy of the iPhone 6, save for some minor differences in design.

It’s just a matter of few days back when Chinese computing and smartphone giant Lenovo acquired Motorola in a whopping $2.91 billion deal. Now the company has recently went out announcing its new handset in the market the Lenovo S90 “Sisley”. However, what majorly surprised us is that Lenovo which is the third largest smartphone manufacturer in the world, choose to copy Apple for the advertisement of this device. There are many small scale handset manufacturers that prefer to copy Apple for their handset advertisements but this is certainly not expected from a reputed company like Lenovo. You might think that why are we much pressing on this, but once you navigate to the bottom of this page and see the advertisement images, we are sure you will surely not believe your eyes.

Well, now focusing on its specs there certainly stand to be good in the mid-range smartphone segment. The Lenovo S90 “Sisley” hosts a 5 inch display with 720p picture resolution, a powerful quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 410 processor to its heart clocked at 1.2GHz which comes with a 1GB of RAM support. The device has an internal storage of 16GB and supports dual-SIM connectivity and NFC. The handset has got some very powerful camera options with 13MP primary camera to its back and a 8MP secondary camera to its front. The device runs the Android 4.4.4. KitKat on-board. The handset is available in four color options of gold, grey, silver and pink. The pricing of the handset is RM1999 that is approx $330. The device measures just 6.9mm of thickness.

Lenovo acquires Motorola Mobility from Google for $2.91 Billion

Xiaomi’s glory at the third spot has been short lived. With the acquisition of Motorola, Lenovo has displaced Xiaomi to become the world’s third largest smartphone maker. Lenovo has announced that it has completed the acquisition of Motorola Mobility from Google.

Lenovo gets the Motorola brand for approximately US$2.91 billion which includes $660 million in cash, $750 million in 519,107,215 newly issued Lenovo stock and the remaining US$1.5 billion as a three-year promissory note to be paid to Google.  Google keeps the majority of Motorola’s patents portfolio while Lenovo gets the Motorola brand, trademark, license to patents and the mobile business.

Motorola’s portfolio consists of notable smartphones such as Moto E, Moto G, Moto X and the DROID family, not to forget the Moto 360 smartwatch. Motorola will be a wholly owned subsidiary of Lenovo and retain its headquarters in Chicago, US. Motorola’s 3500 employees the world over will now be part of Lenovo.

Upon acquisition, the chairman and CEO of Lenovo, Yang Yuanqing said:

Today we achieved a historic milestone for Lenovo and for Motorola – and together we are ready to compete, grow and win in the global smartphone market. By building a strong number three and a credible challenger to the top two in smartphones, we will give the market something it has needed: choice, competition and a new spark of innovation.

Google’s CEO Larry Page said:

Motorola is in great hands with Lenovo, a company that’s all-in on making great devices.

Motorola had come up a lot in the past couple of years and under Google, it has focused on emerging markets and developed affordable smartphones Moto G and Moto E. Motorola’s latest offering is the DROID Turbo and it has built the Nexus 6 for Google. The company is also poised to come out with a new Tablet after the takeover by Lenovo.

Rick Osterloh, President and COO of Motorola Mobility says in his blog post, “Together we will go farther, faster. With an impressive portfolio of smartphones, wearables and PCs, our two companies will be uniquely positioned to push the boundaries of choice and value, and bring exciting new experiences to people everywhere.

Xiaomi becomes world’s third largest Smartphone manufacturer

Chinese smartphone maker Xiaomi has become the third largest smartphone manufacturer in the world according to the latest data released by IDC for the third quarter of 2014. Preliminary data released for the last quarter (July-September) throws up some interesting information. Xiaomi has overtaken LG and Lenovo and jumped to third position even though the company focused only on China and adjacent markets.

Xiaomi’s market share in Q3 of 2013 was just 2.1% which surged to 5.3% in Q3 of 2014 registering a growth of 211.3%, taking it to third spot, trailing behind only Apple and Samsung. Xiaomi shipped 17.3 million smartphone units in the third quarter of this year compared to just 5.6 million units during the same period last year.

Top Smartphone Vendors Q3 2014

Samsung retains its top ranking in Q3 2014 with shipments of 78.1 million smartphones and a market share of 23.8%. Against this, Apple which is at second position, shipped 39.3 million smartphones during the period and had a market share of 12.0%, almost half that of Samsung. However, if we compare Samsung’s this year’s figures with those of last year, its market share has declined quite a bit from 32.5% in Q3 of 2013 to 23.8% in Q3 of 2014, while the share of Apple has dropped only marginally and the company has actually shipped 5.5 million more units this last quarter.

Shipments and market shares of Lenovo and LG have also increased but they couldn’t compete with the Xiaomi Juggernaut and their rankings fell. If we see overall, there were 65.9 million more smartphones shipped in this year’s Q3 as compared to that of last year.

Xiaomi, which is called the Apple of China, entered the smartphone market only about four years back but has progressed quite rapidly even though it sells its products in China and a few nearby countries such as Singapore, India, Taiwan, Malaysia and Hong Kong only .

In February this year, Xiaomi entered the list of top ten best selling smartphones. Then news came that it had surpassed Apple in China to become the second largest smartphone company in the country only behind Samsung. Then according to Canalys, Xiaomi even overtook Samsung in China in Q2 of 2014 becoming the topmost smartphone vendor in the country.

Motorola Acquisition by Lenovo to Bring the Brand Back to Tablet Market

It has been awhile since we saw a new tablet released from Motorola in the physical shop or even heard news that the company is coming out with a new tablet. The last tablet from Motorola was released in 2011 but it was not performing well in the market. Well, all these are going to change. Even HTC which went through the same situation as Motorola, is coming up with the new tablet, Nexus 9. Nexus 9 marked as the return to the tablet segment by the Taiwanese manufacturer. This is interesting since Motorola is also planning to rejoin the tablet market segment too.

If you have not heard the news, Motorola is taken over by Lenovo. The acquisition is expected to finalize by the end of this year.  According to Lenovo’s CEO, Yang Yuanquing, when the acquisition process is done, the company will release new tablets under the brand “Motorola”. The better news is that only tablets which are going to be released but also new smartphones under the same branding.

The CEO also revealed that it is planning to release new products using the “Motorola” or “Lenovo” branding, depending on the popularity level of the branding in the countries where the product is going to be launched.  For example, if in country “A”, Lenovo is more popular then it will use “Lenovo” branding while if in country “B”, Motorola is more popular then it will user “Motorola” as the branding.

There are no further details on the tablets specifications yet. It is not confirmed whether Lenovo going to release both Windows or Android tablet segment or both. We just need to patiently waiting for the next update.

Rumours of Lenovo Yoga Tablet 2 with Windows 8.1 Explained

There are rumours circulating that Lenovo is coming up with Windows 8.1 versions of tablets in its current Yoga Tablet 2 versions. The models which are likely to be released with Windows 8.1 versions are the 8-inch and 10-inch Yoga Tablet 2 devices as well as 13-inch Lenovo Yoga Tablet 2 Pro.

There is a photo leak from Italian tech blog, TabTech.de, shows that most probably a 10.1-inch Lenovo Yoga tablet 2 is using Windows 8.1. The design appears to be similar to the Android version, the only difference is that there is addition of Windows button on the bottom bezel and the tablet’s body is using a slightly darker colour. Currently, there is no further detail on the internal hardware. On top of that, the Windows-based Lenovo Yoga Tablet 2 series most probably is going to use the same specification as the Android version. If the assumption is correct, that means the Windows-based Lenovo Yoga Tablet 2 series will come with Intel Bay Trail chipset, 2GB of RAM, 16GB of internal storage space and a full HD resolution of all the three versions.

Recently, HTC has announced that HTC One M8 is now available with either Android or Windows Phone on the same hardware. However, there is no tablet manufacturer which allows Windows 8.1 and Android versions on the same device. Since Microsoft has lowered or even eliminated the licensing cost Windows 8.1 for tablets, we can expect more and more tablet manufacturers allow customers to choose between the two operating systems.

The C1 is designed to be worn like Google Glass but it is not similar to Glass in design in some ways. The battery in C1 has different placement; it is worn around the neck. Not much is revealed about the device by Lenovo but it introduced the platform which it hoped to join developers on to support the new wearable and for other things.

The platform NBD will provide support for the C1 and many other things relating with mobile software landscape.
