The New Google Glass Rumored to Target on Businesses

When Google Glass first launched for consumers’ usage, there were a lot of controversies surround it.  There were concerns about privacy as Google Glass is able to take pictures of people without their consents and use it to find information about the interest person. Thus, some bars, restaurants and movie theaters have to ban the device.

According to the report published in The Wall Street Journal recently, the next Google Glass will be made for business usage such as in healthcare, manufacturing and energy sectors. As such, we can expect the consumers’ version to be released at a later date, most probably within a year at least.

The new Google Glass will not have the wire frame as the original Explorer version but it will retain the curved glass rectangle design with a button and hinge system to attach itself to other glasses. On top of that, instead of mass production, the device will have to be custom-programmed by software developers for specific business users. It will be start to be used by corporations in the fourth quarter.

Google planned to open a few stores around the U.S. starting from San Francisco for people who are buying the product to be able to get it fitted on while they waited. The new version of Google Glass will be powered by Intel SoC, therefore, we can expect better performance, and the battery life is rumored to stretch up to 2 hours. However, with a pricing tag of $1500, the device is rather pricey, does it?

MPAA and NATO Updated Theatrical Anti-Theft Policy

The Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA) and the National Association of Theatre Owners (NATO) has announced that they are going to prevent film theft in theaters. The update to their joint policy involved a fully integrate wearable tech into the rules following the joint meeting of NATO and MPAA theatrical anti-piracy teams at ShowEast. ShowEast is the annual industry convention and trade show in Hollywood, Florida.

Below is the updated part of the policy:

The National Association of Theatre Owners (NATO) and the Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA) have a long history of welcoming technological advances and recognize the strong consumer interest in smart phones and wearable “intelligent” devices. As part of our continued efforts to ensure movies are not recorded in theaters, however, we maintain a zero-tolerance policy toward using any recording device while movies are being shown. As has been our long-standing policy, all phones must be silenced and other recording devices, including wearable devices, must be turned off and put away at show time. Individuals who fail or refuse to put the recording devices away may be asked to leave. If theater managers have indications that illegal recording activity is taking place, they will alert law enforcement authorities when appropriate, who will determine what further action should be taken.

It seems like the recording devices including wearable devices is referring to Google Glass and smartwatches. However, the Google Glass battery will die after about 30 minutes of continuous recording therefore it needs about 4 Google Glass to capture the entire movie whereas the wearable device is most probably referring to Samsung Gear line which has video capture capability. However, with this device you can only capture 15-seconds at a time and only at 640×480 resolutions.

Google doesn’t want Google Glass Explorers to be Glassholes

Google Glass might be a cool gadget but sometimes Glass wearers flaunt them around acting like jerks and are called “Glassholes”. Google has published some Do’s and Don’ts for its Google Glass explorers to follow while wearing the Glass. Google feels that being rude will not get others excited about Google Glass and will spoil its brand image.

GoogleGlass - 1

One of the Do’s says, “Ask for permission. Standing alone in the corner of a room staring at people while recording them through Glass is not going to win you any friends. The Glass camera function is no different from a cell phone so behave as you would with your phone and ask permission before taking photos or videos of others.

Some Google Glass wearers do not like it when they are asked to take off their Glass at public places. For instance, an engineer Nick Starr was asked to remove his Google Glass at the Lost Lake Cafe and Lounge in Seatle. He was not pleased with this, there was an argument and he was eventually asked to leave by the owners of the Cafe. Nick posted something derogatory about the restaurant on his Facebook page in reply to which, the restaurant called him and his type as “Google Glass wearing man children stinkin up the joint.

Another Google Glass explorer Katy Kasmai was not pleased when she was asked to take off her Glass at the Feast Restaurant in Third Avenue, New York. She posted this on her Google+ account:

For the first time ever this place, Feast, in #NYC just asked that I remove +Google Glass because customers have complained of privacy concerns in the past. Never has happened to me before in the one year I’ve had Glass. I left. #throughglass Feast.

After this, the restaurant started getting one-star ratings on Google reviews from people who might not even have set foot in the restaurant. As Shawn Mernagh giving one-star to Feast wrote, “They discriminate against people who are into new technology. Do not eat here.

GoogleGlass - 2

A string of one-star ratings from those who hadn’t even been to Feast caused its overall Google rating to drop to 2.4 which hurt the business a lot. The restaurant felt this to be “malicious and technically a violation of Google’s own terms for leaving reviews.” By giving bad reviews like this, Google Glass wearers really did behave like Glassholes which Google doesn’t want them to do.

When this news became public, some people visited Google reviews and gave Feast five-star reviews which boosted its overall rating to 3.1. All Google Glass wearers are not Glassholes as is proved by a comment from Zenzi Mulder, “Awesome restaurant, kindly asked if I could remove my Google Glass because others were feeling uncomfortable, luckily Im not the kind of entitled douche to refuse that or get butthurt. Had a great meal.

Google wants the general public to accept Google Glass technology and welcome Glass wearers into the society. If Google Glass explorers are not allowed at various places, it will show the Glass in poor light and hurt its brand image.

As the last point of Google’s Don’ts states:

Don’t Be creepy or rude (aka, a “Glasshole”). Respect others and if they have questions about Glass don’t get snappy. Be polite and explain what Glass does and remember, a quick demo can go a long way. In places where cell phone cameras aren’t allowed, the same rules will apply to Glass. If you’re asked to turn your phone off, turn Glass off as well. Breaking the rules or being rude will not get businesses excited about Glass and will ruin it for other Explorers.

App Review : Google Glass SHORE App To Read Human"s Emotion

The new app for Google Glass is designed to be able to read human’s emotion. Shore Human Emotion Detector (SHORE) was developed by researchers at Fraunhofer Institute for Integrated Circuits in Germany. Its capability includes ability to detect someone’s age, gender and basic emotions. The apps can gauge someone’s feeling based on the 10,000 number of annotated face records in the database. It is able to detect whether someone is happy, sad or angry among all the other type of emotion.

The software was built to help people with communicative disability, for example: autism, so that they can interact better in the society. Another usage of this app is for visually impaired people, so that the missing information can be relayed to the wearer by using audio playback. Fraunhofer emphasize that the app will not able to tell the person’s identity, it is only able to analyse and gauge someone’s feeling at that period of time. Furthermore, in attempt to protect the user’s privacy, the researchers have promised not to send any images or data to the cloud.

Although it has been tested by participating in the Google Glass Explorer Program, the researchers are yet to confirm the launch date of the product. In any case, their challenge is to solve the optimization issue and the ability to run the app in any platform or operating system.

Samsung Gear Blink, Google Glass competitor to arrive in March 2015

Back in May, there was a rumor that Samsung would launch its Google Glass competitor Gear Glass at the IFA 2014 Berlin expo. However, this was not found to be the case when the expo took place in past few days. However, one more rumor has now popped out that Samsung is still is works with such kind of wearable and what now is said that the Tizen powered Samsung Gear Blink might be released next year in March 2015.

However, this information has arrived from an unnamed “industry source” and so we like you to take with a pinch of salt. However, we still can believe that Samsung might possibly plan to unveil this wearable along with the Galaxy S6 that is expected to arrive at the same period of time. Samsung usually plans most of its big release in March or October. The above image shows a patent image from Samsung for its Gear Glass wearable so we can expect the Gear Blink to be looking something similar to that.

According to the Korean publication report, Samsung is gearing up to roll out “Gear Glass” in time for Europe’s biggest electronics fair IFA 2014, which is to be held Sept. 5-10 this year in Berlin, Germany.
