Sometimes wearable devices such as LG G Watch and Samsung Gear Live will have issues such as the tiny display look too bright or too dim. It is because it does not have a light sensor to adjust screen brightness. So far, only Moto 360 is supposed to have an ambient light sensor. Fortunately, there is a new app, Display Brightness for Wear, which will fix this issue. It uses your phone’s time and location to determine how bright the watch should be.
Furthermore, the app uses coarse (network) location on your phone to know where you are and use that to calculate the sunrise and sunset times. If it is night time, the watch brightness is always set to lowest level whereas during the day, the brightness will be set to either medium or high depending on what you are doing. For example, if you are driving then the brightness will be set to high but if you are standing still, it goes to medium.
On top of that, by using activity detection, assumptions will be built to determine whether the user is indoors or outdoors and it will set the display brightness on the watch based on that. The downside is that for battery saving purposes, there might be a delay between each detection.
