There has been a lot of speculation whether Nokia is going to re-enter the smartphones business and if so, when. Well, to set all the speculation to rest, the company has officially issued a statement regarding the subject.
Robert Morlino, a spokesman for Nokia Technologies confirms that the company does plan to make a comeback into the mobile devices business but it will not be manufacturing and selling the handsets directly. Since all of Nokia’s “enormous manufacturing, marketing and channel distribution capabilities” have gone to Microsoft when it sold its Devices and Services business to the Redmond giant in April 2014, the company has now decided to adopt the brand-licensing model.
For this, Nokia will need the right world-class partner “that can be responsible for all of the manufacturing, sales, marketing and customer support for a product.” The company will work closely with the partner to “guide the design and technology differentiation” to “deliver a great product.”
Readers may recall that the company had released its Nokia N1 Android Tablet in November 2014 under a brand-licensing agreement with Foxconn which was quite well received. The company has now declared that as per its agreement with Microsoft, the earliest it could bring out a Nokia branded phone would be in the fourth quarter of 2016. So we cannot expect a mobile phone from the company till then.
