Microsoft working on OneClip, a cross-platform cloud clipboard app

Microsoft is said to be working on a new virtual clipboard app called OneClip and as its name suggests, it will allow the user to copy stuff on to a clipboard and then access it on any other device running on any platform- Windows, Windows Phone, iOS or Andrroid.

OneClip is currently being tested internally by Microsoft in Beta and its versions for Windows and Windows Phone have been leaked out by WalkingCat (@h0x0d) on Twitter.

According to WalkingCat, you can copy any stuff you want on the clipboard like a phone number, an address, a screenshot or any text that you have come across and want to save. Then OneClip will make all the copied stuff available to you on all your devices, whatever platform they may be running on.

The beta version of the app that has been released internally, has bagged a 5-star rating from 12 reviews on Windows Phone Store. It is not known when Microsoft will be releasing the OneClip app for the general public but in view of the high rating, it may be quite soon.

Since people are increasingly using multiple devices these days and often move between devices, OneClip looks like a very useful app to have in your device.

It is interesting to note that Microsoft has been using ‘One’ branding for its cross-platform products – OneDrive, OneNote and now OneClip. Microsoft has also recently released Microsoft Office preview apps for Android.

How to boost your smartphone’s Wi-Fi signal strength

Wi-Fi has become very common in homes, offices and even public places these days. Wi-Fi is wireless local area network which is used by several devices including smartphones. These devices can connect to the internet through the wireless network access points called hotspots. The range of these Wi-Fi hotspots depends on various factors such as the power of transmission, type of antenna, location and the environment.

Today, millions of people in the world are using Wi-Fi and wish to have fast internet speeds and long range. However many of them face performance issues with their Wi-Fi networks due to either the poor performance of the router or the poor WI-Fi antenna of their smartphone. There are several reasons for poor connectivity such as the position of the router or what is sitting near the router or even the materials used in the walls. Fortunately, there are many ways to strengthen it too.

There are many Wi-Fi optimizer apps available on the net but all are not reliable. So instead of wasting time in checking them one by one to see if they are effective, you can adopt the following sure shot way for getting a good Wi-Fi signal on your smartphone at home or at work. The best part is that this method works on any smartphone you have – Android, iOS, Windows Phone or any other.

Here are the steps you need to follow:

1. Access your router’s web interface

For accessing your router’s web interface, you need to type in the router’s local IP address into the browser’s address bar. It is usually 192.168.0.1 but sometimes the default gateway may be slightly different say 192.168.1.1 or even 192.168.2.1.

You can find it out easily on your Windows computer if it has the same network connection as the router. Click the start button located on the bottom left hand side of the window and type cmd and then click on cmd.exe. If it is a higher Windows version, you can find it on the sliding panel on the right side.

2. Find the default gateway

When the cmd.exe loads, a black rectangular window will appear. Type in ipconfig in it and among other things, your default gateway will appear. This is your router’s local IP address which you can note down.

Boosting wi-fi strength-2

3. Accessing router’s settings

You can now switch over to your smartphone. Open the browser and enter the router’s IP address. You will get a pop up window for entering User Name and Password. The User Name is usually admin and the password is either admin or password. However, if it doesn’t work, you can easily find it through Google search once you give the router’s make. Once you type out the correct User name and Password combo, you will be able to log in.

4. Going to wireless settings

After logging in, you will see a web interface which is different for routers of different brands. There you will find the option wireless, then go to wireless settings or something similar. The image below shows the interface for TP-Link router.

Boosting wi-fi strength-4

5. Wireless channel

Once you go to wireless settings, you will find the channel option. This will show you the frequency at which the router is transmitting the Wi-Fi signal. You can speed up the Wi-Fi signal by changing your router’s channel. You will have to choose the channel with least interference to get a better signal.

Boosting wi-fi strength-5

6. Choosing the right channel

If many nearby networks are using the same channel, there will be more interference and the signal will be weak. To analyze the interference, you can use Wi-Fi Analyser for Android or inSSIDer utility for Windows. It will scan the nearby networks and find out the best channel that will give you minimum interference.

The most commonly used router is the old 2.4GHz one which has up to 14 channels to choose from depending on your area. Each channel is separated only by 5MHz of spectrum so there is a lot of overlap between nearby networks. You will have to choose the best one out of them which gives you the optimum signal strength.

Windows 10 Will be the last Windows version

During Microsoft’s multi-day event with people in IT industry, Microsoft Ignite, Jerry Nixon, one of the developer in the company, announced that Windows 10 will be the last major launch for Windows platform.

“Right now we’re releasing Windows 10, and because Windows 10 is the last version of Windows, we’re all still working on Windows 10”, he said.

However, it is not what you are thinking of. Rest assured, Microsoft will not stop producing the next Windows version. However, the model is shifted from the current model whereby you can just buy Windows out of shelves or it comes with the laptop which you purchased to a service model.

Windows will be working in the similar way as Google Chrome, which is one of the first examples of software which is upgraded by using updates as long as the hardware can support it. Chrome updates happen in the background where features are added or get tuned out as they roll out. Thus, the users may not aware of the changes. A few years ago, Chrome replaced the entire browser engine from the open source WebKit to its own product Blink and it was done in a manner whereby not a single user realized the major change. To the user, it is still Chrome.

Microsoft pledged that Windows 10 will arrive in summer; however, it is not shipped with all the features that the company has promised in the beginning. The features promised such as Edge will arrive a little while after launch.

Microsoft announces Carrier Billing for Apps across all Windows 10 devices

Microsoft’s Build 2015 saw another important announcement made by the Redmond tech giant. During the keynote address, the company revealed that it will expand its carrier billing facility to support all the Windows 10 devices including Windows Tablets and PCs. Currently, carrier billing is available only on Windows smartphones.

You will soon be able to make digital purchases from the Windows marketplace by charging them to your smartphone bill provided your carrier supports it. For this, Microsoft has partnered with 90 mobile operators and their number is expected to grow with time.

Carrier billing is convenient for people who don’t have a credit card for making purchases. This is especially true for emerging markets such as Asia where most of the people have mobile phones but not necessarily a credit or debit card. Carrier billing will make it easy for them to purchase apps and games from the Windows store. Since the price of the apps purchased is charged to your phone bill, these items show up in your phone bill.

Windows-store-carrier-billing2

This will also help to boost sales of Microsoft’s apps and in-app content. In fact, it has been found that sales of digital content in emerging markets grew eight- fold after carrier billing went live for Windows phones. Developed markets saw a three-fold growth. This number is expected to go up when all Windows devices including Windows-based laptops and PC start supporting it. So apart from the benefit to users, this will also provide an opportunity for developers to make more money.

Softcard Support for Windows Phone is Terminated as Google Acquired the Technology

Softcard is a mobile payment service owned jointly by Verizon, T-Mobile and AT&T. Recently Google has purchased the technology behind this mobile payment service, however, just to be clear, Google does not purchase the company. This way is seen as Google’s way to compete with ApplePay which is provided by Apple. This process comes with a few changes. One thing that remains the same for now is that the app for Android will continue to work, therefore, users can continue to tap and pay at over 275,000 locations in the states.

It is recommended that Softcard users to download Google Wallet. Sadly, Google is planning to shut down the Softcard app and terminate Softcard wallets. However, the challenge is that Softcard users cannot easily switch to Google Wallet as personal information is not part of the transaction between Softcard and Google. Therefore,  after Softcard user has terminated the wallet service provided by Softward, the loyalty cards cannot be used.

On top of that Google announced that the tech company is also shutting down the Softcard Windows Phone app. There is no confirmation date on when the app will be closed.  Moreover, Google is expected to launch Android Pay at Google I/O. Android Pay is an API for developers who want to add a mobile payments option to their apps. Android Pay will be separated from Google Wallet.

Microsoft is now second most valuable company behind Apple

The world of finance is always in flux with ranks changing as stocks are traded in the market. This past week Microsoft surpassed Exxon Mobil in terms of market capitalization. Exxon Mobil had been the most valuable company until it was taken over by Apple a few years ago. Even though Microsoft surpassed Exxon Mobil, it is still nowhere near Apple just yet.

Apple’s rank was temporarily taken away from it when the Apple Maps mess was being dealt with, but that situation was soon resolved. Cupertino’s giant has since maintained a very high value which does not seem reachable by Exxon Mobil at least in the next few years.

Microsoft has been making good progress and its stock has been improving in the past year as a result. Microsoft saw a stock increase of 40% in the past year since January.

Microsoft’s market valuation is about $408 billion which exceeds Exxon Mobil’s market cap value at $402 billion. The decrease in Exxon’s  market value is attributed to the decrease in fuel prices. These positions are expected to switch since both companies are looking good this year.

Daniel Ives, a tech analyst at FBR Capital Markets says that:

“Microsoft has made a strategic change,”

He said that compared to companies like IBM, Hewlett-Packard and Oracle:

“Microsoft has done the best job of trying to skate where the puck is going,”

Seems like Microsoft has taken some clues from Apple in this regard. Apple was known to take big bets on its products. Both Microsoft and Exxon Mobil are catching up to Apple, currently valued at $670 billion which is not likely to decrease.

Nokia Camera Comes Back As Lumia Camera On The Windows Phone Store

Microsoft recently removed the Nokia Camera app from their online app Store. They changed the app and released the Lumia Camera and Lumia Camera Classic apps in its place. Although these are new apps, if you are looking for new features, you won’t really find them here.

Nokia Camera app re-branded as Lumia Camera, returns to Windows Phone Store - 2 - DoiToshin

It turns out that they just wanted to rebrand the app so that the name is changed but the app remains the same. The old Nokia Camera app is now rebranded as the Lumia Camera app. The Lumia Camera app lets you change the camera’s capture settings. It is set to auto by default, but you can change various settings from the app to customize the way your photos are taken.

If your device’s camera has not received the Denim firmware update then you will need the Lumia Camera Classic app instead. The Lumia Camera Classic app used to be known as Nokia Camera Beta.

Of course, both the Lumia Camera app and the Lumia Camera Classic app are available for free in the Windows Phone Store.

This step is part of the process of removing the Nokia branding off Lumia products. There is also news that Nokia is working on an Android phone, which explains why Microsoft wants to keep the two separate.

Is This Microsoft’s New Smart Watch?

We have heard many rumors that Nokia and Microsoft are both working on separate wearable tech. The Microsoft rumors seemed believable because of a report that surfaced a couple of days ago. It stated that Microsoft might be getting ready to release a new smartwatch in the near future. Probably within a few weeks time.

It seems that now we have more tangible evidence because Microsoft recently filed for a new device which has also cleared the FCC. This new device could be the next Microsoft smartwatch.

The filing is labeled as “Mobile Wireless Device” but the device only contains Bluetooth LE for connectivity. We know that, devices that only contain bluetooth are usually Bluetooth keyboards and mice. This seems unlikely as Microsoft never goes too deep into accessories.

Another thing is that the device comes in three sizes: small, medium, and large. So, it can’t be a mouse or keyboard. It sounds more like a wearable at least. It could be a fitness tracker or maybe the small sized device will be the fitness tracker, and the others will include a smart watch.

Since Microsoft was also rumored to be working on a fitness device, all three of these could be fitness trackers. I’m sure we’ll find out soon.

Next version of windows os will be revelead next week

There have been so many rumours about the next upcoming new Windows OS from Microsoft, especially for its features. There is not many detail of the name yet, but a lot of people refer it as “Windows 9” since Microsoft has always been using numbering system for its Windows version. However, it is rumoured that the next Windows OS will be at the different direction than Windows 7 and Windows 8.

Next week, there will be a special gathering for invite-only guests.  The event will be held in San Francisco.  Some of the major features of Windows 9 will be released. The most interesting question that we would like to know is what makes it different than Windows 7 and Windows 8. What will be the new features and enhancements that are going to be in Windows 9 version?

Microsoft is still deciding on the name of the product. It is not confirm that it is going to be Windows 9. However, there are still a lot of possibilities, it could be named “Windows X” or “Windows One” since the company’s new console and cloud service has “One” theme. It might even just be “Windows” for simplicity but it could also make confusion in the market since people might not know the “Windows” is referring to “Windows 7” or “Windows 8” or maybe even “Windows XP”.

Well, the best thing that we can do now is just to wait for a couple of days more as Microsoft will make its Technical Preview of its new product public by next week.

Windows Phone Brand to be re-named as Windows confirms a leaked image

There are a lot of rumors these days in the tech industry about Microsoft working for unifying Windows. Recently a leaked photo arriving from My Go GoPhone GF47W, shows the back of the Windows Phone handset that shows just the word Windows instead of Windows Phone and confirms much about the Microsoft plans.

Reports show that this change has been incorporated with the decision to give HTC’s new model the name HTC One M8 for Windows and not for the Windows Phone. Moreover, there are other claims coming from the industry that show Microsoft might also plan to remove the Nokia branding from its handsets.

This means after some period of time, there is possibility that there would be no Nokia handsets after few years. This may be certainly a jolt for all the Nokia fans out there. However, its just a matter of time as Microsoft makes things official.

The previous version consists of user interface refinement and the newer version consists of the simple control and added features in an all new design.

New Design

Microsoft has moved the OneDrive for Business Recycle Bin to the left hand side navigation area of the Web view. This is the first change anyone would notice.

onedrive-1

“About Me” Page

The “About Me” page has been given a face-lift to highlight document and people you have in common with the person who is viewing your page. Also, previous upper left position of your profile picture will no longer appear in the OneDrive for Business user interface; however it’ll be displayed all across Office 360 when it becomes a part of the evolving global navigation bar which is on the top.

onedrive-2

Simple Controls Bar

A new Simple Controls bar has been added by the Microsoft with “new”, “upload”, “sync”, “edit”, “manage” and “share” options. Simple Control bar appears right above your personal work document folders. You can create new Office documents, upload files, initiate sync to take files offline, share your files externally and internally and more, all just with a click or touch. Microsoft has made Simple Controls available for all team site document libraries.

onedrive-3

Site Folders

Main Web view now has the new Site Folders link. It will directly take you to document libraries within sites you follow. With this option Microsoft has made OneDrive for Business the single location for all your work files, personal documents or shared files.

onedrive-4

Smart Search

Smart Search joins the OneDrive for Business in addition to the above listed new features. The Smart Search is easy to use; you can just start typing a filename to find any document that has been shared with you or the one you have uploaded. Also, popping out search result allows you to take immediate actions like sharing a file. The smart search box is located at the upper left; earlier the search box was at the upper right.

“This change is for greater consistency across the Office 365 experience,” said Microsoft.

Microsoft patent filing reveals smartwatch plans

With last year’s rumours suggesting that Microsoft’s Surface team was working on a prototype smartwatch, Microsoft’s recent smartwatch patent should confirm to investors that Nadella is not letting Windows get stuck on the realms of computers and smartphones.

The patent outlines that the smartwatch would also double as a fitness tracker whilst featuring music playback, phone and messaging functionality. The photos show that the watch face is designed to be “releaseably secured” and detach from the wristband. “This enables the user to conveniently remove the frame and band from the information device after exercise to wash the frame and band and to store the information device, band attached or not, in a dock which can facilitate charging and possibly data transfer while the information device is not in use,” the patent reads. The design will also allow the device be docked in exercise machines and equipment, becoming a personal fitness recorder.

Focusing on fitness, the device will include an optical light sensor on the bottom of the watch, making contact with the user’s skin in order to measure various exercise-related metrics such as heart rate. It is also suggested that the watch will feature GPS which will allowing tracking of the user’s position and route.

A removable electronic band will come in a red, black, yellow and blue colour. It is also thought to be made of oxynitride aluminium, a translucent form of the metal and will run a version of Windows 8.

Microsoft will hold an event in New York City on May 20, allegedly to launch the long-rumored Surface Mini, as well as other products. There’s no indication, but a strong possibility of new Microsoft smartwatch appearance at the event. Anyone looking forward to a smartwatch from Microsoft?

No leaks have arrived about the specs of the phone just yet but we do know that its a Windows Phone. It will probably have a Qualcomm Snapdragon processor as well. The Name Remix indicates that it might be associated with music. The rest of the user interface is predictable because its a Windows Phone. Since its Microsoft and HTC, we can assume that the form factor of the phone will be premium.

HTC tries to keep high standards for its phones and the M8′s aluminum unibody design may be incorporated into the HTC One Remix as well. We might also see duel cameras similar to ones on the HTC (M8). We may see the 4MP UltraPixel camera or maybe a better camera sensor. Or maybe HTC will try to keep the bar low on this one, who knows.

HTC used to make cutting-edge phones for Microsoft with Windows Phone OS in them but its been a while since then. HTC has not shown us a good Windows Phone in years. The last phone they released for Windows was the HTC 8XT and it was not bad but not really all that good either. We will post new information on the new HTC Windows Phone as more information arrives. Until than, keep your eyes on the @evleaks twitter feed for more leaks than you can handle. We will keep our eyes peeled as well.

Turn on your PC remotely with cortana using VoiceWake for windows phone

If you have cortana available in your windows 8.1 phone, then you are all set to try the new application named Voice Walk lite. Many of you will be thinking of how to use it when cortana is not available outside U.S.  For that matter, you can try the region hack to enable Microsoft’s new voice assistant. This app is been designed for waking up your PC using ‘wake-on-LAN’. Now you can turn on your PC from miles away and we know that you have your own ideas too.

To gather more information about Wake On LAN, you can take help of Google or Wiki.

The very simple design of the app makes it easy to use and it is going to get better, as the ‘lite’ version will be out soon.

Wake On LAN should have been enabled on your PC before you start using this app. For all those who have not used it in past; it can be found under the BIOS settings when the computer boots first. Now that you have Wake On LAN on your PC, just download the app and configure it with your PC’s Mac address, IP info, etc.

The app is ready to use once everything is configured correctly. Now you can just give a voice command: “Cortana wake (your computer name)”.  See how it works by playing the embedded video.

It also offers some amazing features like ‘location based wake feature and wake schedule feature’. It means that you can wake your PC when you reach somewhere or at a certain time. To enjoy this outstanding feature, you may upgrade to the paid version, which will be out soon.

It is available here, in the store, and we will keep you informed about the paid version.
