Apple Unveiled Patent of Flexible OLED Panels That Suppliers are Working on for a Future iPhone

OLED1OLED patent

Apple recently unveiled its patent for a phone that has a curved display. This indicates that the company might be heading in that direction in the come times, and secure it in the USPTO the way it usually does. According to a Korean publication, there is a high chance that Apple might be pursuing devices that have flexible OLED panels unlike most of the patent filings.

Apple’s suppliers

The question is why Korea. The answer is that both LG and Samsung have done more research on flexible OLED, and they are also producing flexible OLED displays. The former is also Apple’s screen supplier. According to the source, the major Korean display manufacturers are finalizing the flexible screens deal with Apple. The source also claims that LG has already decided when it is going to transform one of its LCD lines into an OLED manufacturing firm. OLED2

Apple’s flexbile iPhone

Like the G Flex 2, LG already has its own devices with flexible displays. The company already supplies the OLED for the Apple Watch; however, that’s not all. The source claims, there is a high chance that the first flexible iPhone will be introduced in the year 2018 because Apple’s best suppliers are already working on it. The year 2018 seems to be far away, but Apple has a habit of waiting till a new technology matures enough. Apple likes to prove its mettle in terms of added value for the consumer. Therefore, Apple might not be introducing the unique flexible iPhone soon, but it might add other virtues to flexible OLED displays like durability and thinness. Time will tell!
