Google Wallet update rolls out with improvements in Interface and notifications

The Google Wallet app for Android has been updated by Google with various improvements. Google Wallet has posted on Google+ announcing that it has now become easy for users to manage gift cards and loyalty programs in their Google Wallet as it can now be done at one centralized location.

In the update, a single link has been given in the navigation drawer to access gift cards and loyalty programs. They have been formed into a single group with their screens merged and displayed as sliding pages. These sliding pages are titled “Active”, “Expired” and “Featured”. All the valid gift cards and loyalty programs will be shown under the “Active” tab while the outdated ones will go under “Expired”.

As you can see, Google has also removed some clutter and cleaned up the screen to make it visually appealing in line with its material design guidelines. The notifications shown by the Google Wallet when a user enters a recognized store or a place having great deals have also gone richer. The earlier simple notifications have given way to more detailed descriptions. You can also quickly browse through the list with the Next, Previous and First buttons without opening the app.

Who would have thought that Apple would be doing Google Wallet a favour by putting in motion a contender, the Apple Pay? The recent launch of the latter ironically boosted Google Wallet’s weekly transactions by 50 percent as well as it has increased tremendously Google Wallet’s new users. With October’s statistics said to be doubled compared to the previous month as stated by a source for Ars Technica.

Apple really knows how the market works. The release of the Apple Pay was very timely considering that the world is already in the process of changing direction to NFC-capable payment or the Near Field Communication-capable payment. And even if this revenue surge for Google Walllet might be temporary, it has still brought enough awareness about the technology.

• Apple Pay is advertised better than Google Play.


• With Google Wallet you need to swipe and enter a pin. With Apple Pay you only need to hold your phone and tap on the screen.


• Google Wallet has access to information about the user’s purchases while Apple Pay cannot see such information excluding the most recent purchases on the Passbook.


• Google Wallet is available even on older iOS 6 and Android Gingerbread version while Apple Pay can only be used on newer iPhones, which I think is a good selling point. You can also use iPad Air 2 and iPad Mini3 to do transactions.


• Google Wallet is accepted in 300,000 stores while Apple Pay only works in 220,000 stores. However, considering that it is only a few weeks old, it is not totally a disadvantage.

Google Wallet for Android Gets Multi Account Support

Google Wallet has been excellent for making payments and has gained a lot of popularity. However it just supported single account per phone. So a lot of users were not happy due to this as some of their close ones might need the phone to send cash or make a payment at times. All of those who were bothered by this limitation, this issue has been resolved now. Google has made few changes in user interface of the Wallet app for Android which allows users to access different accounts on the same phone. They have made one more change; users will get the shipment updates on orders directly through this app.

Along with the change in Wallet app, Google has also made a change that would impact other apps. There is a refresh of Google Play services and it aids developers to place Google Wallet Instant Buy buttons in the titles. If they make this change, it would not be easy to buy something spontaneously. Though it’s not great news for instinctive shoppers; it might cheer those that handle their finances well.

The changes made by Google are going to make Wallet app users on Android very happy. We will have to wait and watch how the other upgrade treats users.
