Foxconn New Factory to Produce OLED Panels for Apple

Foxconn is spending $2.6 billion over the next two years on a display factory as reported in November 2014. However, it was not disclosed what kind of displays would be produced by the factory in the report last year. One of the leading newspapers in Japan – Nikkan Kogyo Shimbun recently reported that Foxconn is planning to produce OLED panels in the company’s newly funded display factory. It will begin mass production of panels exclusively for Apple by the end of 2015. These OLED panels will be shipped to Cupertino afterwards.

The current goal is to produce OLED panels into limited production in 2016 by this display factory while Foxconn Japan RD Co. will be responsible in researching the manufacturing, technology and equipment of OLED displays.

The OLED displays will then be used for Apple’s smartphones such as iPhone or iPad and wearables such as Apple Watch. Currently, LG is the main supplier for iWatch and Apple is still using LCD displays for iPhones which is produced by one of the largest LCD display manufacturers in Taiwan and happens to be owned by Foxconn too.  Is it hinted that in the future, Apple might consider switching to OLED displays in the future?

Foxconn struggles to deliver the iPhone 6 Demand

Foxconn which is Apple’s major assembler is struggling to meet the high demand of iPhone 6. The latest Apple product has been sold out during its pre-order launch, selling more than 4 million units during the first 24 hours. As the result, the customers need to wait about 4 weeks in order the device to be shipped out to their home.

All the workers in Foxconn site has been allocated to do the production of the new iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 plus.  Total of 100 assembly lines which consists more than 200,000 workers has been working around the clock in its largest production site, Zhengzhou, north central China, to meet the demand.

Foxconn was also the only assembler of the iPhone 5S and a small portion of iPhone 5C.The bigger portion of iPhone 5C was manufactured by another Taiwanese contract maker Pegatron. Later on, Foxconn stopped manufacturing the iPhone 5C to concentrate all its resources to make iPhone 5S.

Foxconn is able to produce 140,000 iPhone 6 plus and 400,000 iPhone 6 daily. This makes the iPhone 6 plus scarcer. The waiting time for iPhone 6 plus is longer, around three-to-four weeks while for iPhone 6, and the waiting time is around seven to ten business days.

The main reason of the longer waiting time is that the limited supply of 5.5-inch displays. iPhone 6 plus comes with 5.5-inch screen size. The output rate of 5.5-inch is only around 50-60% whereas for 4.7-inch is about 85%. iPhone 6 comes with 4.7-inch screen size.

The low production of display is because the display is using in-cell technology, which allows the screens to be thinner and lighter by combining touch sensors to liquid crystal display, thus a separate touch-screen layer is no longer needed.

iPhone 6: Foxconn Announces Two 4.7" and 5.5" variants

Foxconn’s press release states that it will start shipping the 4.7″ model from July, and produce 70% of the total 4.7″ units in 2015. Manufacturing for the 5.5″ model will begin this August. This confirms what our sources had already told us: that the smaller model would most likely be released before the phablet version, which Apple may even wait until September to announce.

Here is the press release:-

WWDC 2014 is over, and we saw no symptoms of the new iPhone. It is being speculated that September 19th is the day when Apple will officially release the next iPhone. The statement also confirms that Foxconn will start manufacturing the 5.5-inch version in August, hence September is possibly the month when Apple will unwrap the curtains of new iPhone.

Apple’s upcoming iPhone is surely the most anticipated device of 2014. Companies like Samsung and HTC introduced their flagship devices recently, and it’s a known fact that both HTC and Samsung are giving stiff competition to Apple. The new iOS 8 has a lot of new and good features, and when it will be released with the iPhone 6, it might give Android OEM’s a run for their money.

Do you want to see the front of iPhone6 like this one?

After letting you analyze that alleged-image which reveals the back of the Apple iPhone 6 dummy, similar to other alleged photographs of the next iPhone, one more design by Foxconn insider signals more rounded corners. These leaked images brought into light from a tweet sent by Sonny Dickson. One has to mention Dickson as a big player .His record for the last year of huge number of leaks including the one which showed off the plastic exterior of the Apple iPhone 5c. The young chap from Australia had actually worked out an arrangement that permitted him to procure images and authentic parts smuggled out of Foxconn.

After this tweet in the morning, Dickson claimed the picture as the front side of the Apple iPhone 6 dummy. Similar to the photo of the back of the piece, one can identify the outlook which seems slim shape with rounded design .It certainly appears to be a larger than 4 inch display. While it is not solid yet, the bezels also appear so thinner.

While Dickson keeps an impressive history to brag, we propose just to enjoy and to take these iPhone 6 leaked images with a grain of salt. There are plenty of doubts roaming around the next model of the iPhone, counting the prospect of a phablet version of the device, thereby deciding to be a cynic is the best suggestion from our side on such leaks.
