Foxconn is spending $2.6 billion over the next two years on a display factory as reported in November 2014. However, it was not disclosed what kind of displays would be produced by the factory in the report last year. One of the leading newspapers in Japan – Nikkan Kogyo Shimbun recently reported that Foxconn is planning to produce OLED panels in the company’s newly funded display factory. It will begin mass production of panels exclusively for Apple by the end of 2015. These OLED panels will be shipped to Cupertino afterwards.
The current goal is to produce OLED panels into limited production in 2016 by this display factory while Foxconn Japan RD Co. will be responsible in researching the manufacturing, technology and equipment of OLED displays.
The OLED displays will then be used for Apple’s smartphones such as iPhone or iPad and wearables such as Apple Watch. Currently, LG is the main supplier for iWatch and Apple is still using LCD displays for iPhones which is produced by one of the largest LCD display manufacturers in Taiwan and happens to be owned by Foxconn too. Is it hinted that in the future, Apple might consider switching to OLED displays in the future?
