Samsung in buyout talks with Nuance Communications

According to reports coming out of the Wall Street Journal, speech recognition service Nuance Communications has undergone acquisition talks with Samsung and being exploring the possibility of a sale.

Anticipating the rumored potential deal, Nuance’s market capital jumped from a valuation of $5.5 billion to almost $6 billion few days back. Nuance released its first commercial speech application back in 1996 and has gone on to be the company behind Dragon Naturally Speaking, S Voice, and even Siri.

Voice recognition and voice enabled features in devices is becoming more noticeable and a huge focal point for many of the OEMs and companies involved with electronics and mobile device manufacturing. Google has its own technology built behind Google Now and Google voice search.

Apple’s virtual assistant Siri is powered by Nuance in the back-end.Samsung has associated with Nuance late in 2013 for the voice recognition functionalities in S Voice on its Galaxy Gear smart watch and Galaxy Note 3 smartphone.

Although many companies use Nuance Communications speech recognition software in their products, Samsung is by far the largest and uses it the most. You can find the voice software in many of Samsung’s different mobile devices, TV’s and even upcoming wearables. Samsung could be looking for a way to strengthen and further their own speech recognition by purchasing Nuance.

In addition to Samsung, Nuance has also reportedly held talks with Panasonic, Nintendo, and Daimler AG. There’s no word on Apple bidding for the Nuance too, but it’s safe to assume that there would be at least some concern circulating in Apple’s camp if Samsung were to own the company that also provides them with essential technology.
