Microsoft to unveil successor of Nokia X Android phone

The countdown timer has come close to hours for unveiling the second generation of Nokia X Android based phones from Microsoft.According to the Nokia Conversations blog, the announcement will be on June 24 12:00 AM(PST). Apart from the countdown timer, Microsoft also released a teaser with a green puzzler image and two statements:”Green with envy” and “Summer brings out our inner glow”. Earlier back in February,Nokia (when Nokia’s Devices and Services unit didn’t belong to Microsoft) used green ducks for the original Nokia X announcement.

Nokia X2 reportedly will be slightly more powerful successor to the Android-powered Nokia X that debuted several months ago. The new phone will offer larger displays, better rear-facing cameras and snappier performance. It will have a home button – unlike the first Nokia X model, which only offers a back button (this acts as a home button only if you long press it). It might also capable of booting both Android and Windows Phone.

The upcoming Microsoft successor will sport a 4.3-inch display with a resolution of 800 x 480 pixels, a dual-core Snapdragon 200, running at 1.2GHz, 1GB of RAM, 4GB of built-in storage, and a 5MP rear camera. The device in question is rolling under the RM-1013 model number and its codename is Nokia X2DS. Once again, it will be running a forked version of Android 4.3 Jelly Bean, concluding that Google’s services and apps won’t come preinstalled on the phone.

Nokia has made APIs for maps, push notifications and in-app billing that replace Google’s comparable APIs. And Microsoft developed versions of some of its key apps and services, including Skype, Outlook.com, OneDrive and Nokia Camera. Nokia X users can download more Android apps from the Nokia Store.

Microsoft officials are stating always that offering Android-based phones is a way to attract a set of users to Microsoft’s ecosystem, rather than a way to compete with its own Windows Phones. These hardware specifications put Microsoft’s upcoming Android-powered handset pretty much on par with the budget friendly Motorola Moto E.
