Samsung to Develop Super-High 11K Resolution 2250 ppi density Mobile Displays

How would you like it if your mobile had an 11K resolution display? That’s right, 11K resolution meaning 2250 pixels per inch! Well, South Korean electronics giant is planning to make such a super resolution display which would be the highest resolution display in the world. A report by etnews from Korea says that Samsung is working on this project in partnership with industry and education.


At the 10th Display Field National Research Development Business General Workshop held recently, Chu Hye Yong, Executive Director at Base Technology Department, Samsung Display, announced that the company has taken up the challenge to develop the 11K super-resolution display with pixel density of 2250 ppi which would be 3x more compared to the earlier resolution.

Samsung is working in collaboration with the government of South Korea which is investing a sum of 26.5 million over the period of five years. Around thirteen companies, both domestic and foreign, are involved in the development of this technology since June 1.


The project is called EnDK and is a part of Korean government’s Giga-Korea project which is led by its Ministry of Science, ICT, and Future Planning (MSIP). A prototype of the product is expected to be shown to the public at the Pyeongchang Winter Olympics to be held in 2018.


The display with super-high 11K resolution 2250 ppi density and an aspect ratio of 16:9, would measure 5.74 inches diagonally and its resolution would be a whopping 11,264 x 6,336. In such a high resolution, the colors and other detailing have such great clarity that it creates an optical illusion producing a 3D effect. Users will feel that they are watching a 3D screen. Currently, the best display specification available for mobiles is 2K 2560×1440 resolution 500 ppi display. Full HD smartphone displays are 1080p and Quad HD ones are 1,440p. There are products with UHD 4K are available 8K TV prototypes have also been developed. Several mobile makers are now developing smartphones with 4K displays.


Such high resolution displays will certainly be power-intensive. This means Samsung also needs to figure out how to make the 11K display power-efficient or invent a high-capacity battery.


Chu Hye Yong says, “Although some might think that 11K as ‘over specification’ that consumers do not need, this can work as a basis for Korean display industry take another leap if related materials and parts improve through this.

Apple Curved iPhone Rumored Released by 2018

Apple is rumored to release a curved iPhone by 2018. On top of that, the technology company is rumored to use OLED (Organic Light-Emitting Diode) as the screen of the iPhone’s in the future. With this move, hopefully, it can solve the existing issue which plagued the current iPhone’s screen display including color saturation, accuracy and brightness. It is not surprising that Apple has patented this to USPTO just in case.


If Apple uses OLED –based flexible screen in the future, it will have a positive impact to the manufacturing companies out there since Apple has not done it before so it is expected that there will be a lot of order from the company. Currently Apple is using flexible OLED screens for Apple Watch which the display is supplied by LG Display and Samsung Display.


LG Display, one of Apple major display supplier has released its own flagship smartphone with flexible display in G Flex 2.  LG plans to move its LCD lines in Gumi factory to OLED line so that the company is ready to do mass production in case there is a huge demand for it. It is expected that the mass production will start in 2017.


Samsung on the other hand, has started to use curved screen display in their flagship smartphone, Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge which was released earlier this year.  We cannot wait to try the final product!

Samsung Display reported to be working for flexible displays for the Note 5 and Galaxy S7

After the big announcement of the Samsung Galaxy S6 and the Galaxy S Edge last month, rumors for the next Samsung flagship have already started to begin. An unnamed source from the hometown of South Korea has claimed that Samsung’s display division aka the Samsung Display is reportedly for the next flagship handset from the Samsung camp which would most probably be the Galaxy Note 5 and the Galaxy S7. As per the ETNews, Samsung has already announced that the company would need nearly 8 million panels for the upcoming Galaxy S7 as the production begins. As a result of this, the display production unit at Samsung has already started to expand its largest factory which is said to switch the manufacturing process from glass to polymide.


Polymide polymer has been very largely used in the manufacturing of OLED displays. However, the manufacturing using this material is bit difficult and Samsung would need to find a way to meet the demand. The new expansion of the manufacturing facility is said to be completed by this August. An Samsung official has claimed that


“The expansion is inevitable because it has been announced that Samsung Electronics have requested of 8 million flexible panels per month for Galaxy S7″.


Well another device that would be closely watched out this year would be Samsung Galaxy Note 5 with its display and there is also an edge version of the handset expected. This means we could expect the second generation Note Edge from the Korean tech giant ahead by this September.

LG Display and Samsung Display New Technologies: Transparent and Flexible Displays Respectively

The two leading companies in the global display market, LG Display and Samsung Display are working to develop new types of technologies which will offer new experiences for their customers. The two new technologies that are currently being developed is transparent displays and flexible displays.


Transparent display is a technology whereby a picture can be displayed on a glass. It is currently being used in commercial aircraft, fighter planes and billboards.  On top of that, it is also used in luxury sedans to display the driving information which is placed in front of the driver. Some of these luxury sedans which currently use this technology are Hyundai Motor, Mercedes-Benz and BMW. A senior official from LG Display informed the public that the development of this display technology is already completed and the promotional prototype is also available, however, it will take some time to commercialize the product due to demand and supply.


The other technology, flexible display, is a paper-like display which produces the same quality when the product is bent. The challenge of this technology is to make the display as accurately as possible while making the product as light as possible.  The stage of evolution of flexible display technology can be defined as curved, bended, foldable and rollable. Some of the examples of the products which is using this technology is LG G Flex 2 and Samsung curved edge display which is placed between the first and second stages.


The flexible technology is currently used in mobile devices as well as wearable devices. However, it can be further expanded to entire IT industry including laptops and monitors. An official from Samsung Display said that the commercialization of foldable smartphone will be made possible in 2016.
