Windows Phone 8.1 Update 2 Comes with Anti-Theft Feature

Windows Phone 8.1 Update 2 or which internally known as GDR2 (General Distribution Release 2) can be considered as the minor OS Update to Microsoft Windows Phone operating system. The first update version was released in August 2014 whereas the second update version is to be finalized and released to developers in the Preview for Developers program in November 2014.

The Windows Phone 8.1 GDR2 will come with a new anti-theft mechanism which is known as Reset Protection. However the “Reset Protection” feature must be enabled by the manufacturer when they assembly the product. Therefore, this feature may not be enabled in some of the smartphones which uses Windows as the operating system.

Reset Protection will have the protection for reset and reactivation as well as anti-rollback. By reset and reactivation, it means that the stolen device will not be able to reset or flash the device. When the user intended to factory reset the device, they will be prompted to enter their Microsoft Account credential which associated to the device. Moreover, if the device is flashed with the new image and when the “Reset Protection” feature was enabled, the Microsoft Account credential associated to the device required to finish OOBE before the device can be used.

Anti-rollback protection, on the other hand, if the “Reset Protection” feature is enabled, the device will not be able to be flashed to an earlier version of the operating system that does not support “Reset Protection” feature.
