Motorola Rumored to be Working on a 5.9-inch Nexus 6 Smartphone Shamu

A lot of speculation is going on about which company is developing the Nexus 6 for Google. At first it was thought to be LG but LG had denied working on any Google projects.  Then there were rumors about a new HTC 8.9-inch tablet codenamed Volantis to be the Nexus 8 or Nexus 9 Tablet. It is also rumored that Google would put a stop to the Nexus line and focus on its Android Silver program.

However, a new rumor doing the rounds is that Motorola is working on the next Google Nexus device and that it could be unveiled in November this year. According to Android Police, Motorola is apparently working on a big 5.9-inch smartphone of unknown resolution bearing the codename ‘Shamu’ which is in line with Google’s practice of codenaming its nexus devices with names of sea-creatures. According to sources, the phablet will have a fingerprint sensor and would be released through major US carriers and some other international carriers.

The device Shamu has been spotted in Google’s issue tracker where a bug observed in the device has been reported. The bug that is reported is in Android L, Google’s upcoming new Android version announced at the Google I/O. Since Android L works with Nexus devices only, the rumor that Shamu could be the new Nexus smartphone gets credibility. It was also learnt that this issue has been reported by Spirent which is a company that tests devices for such type of bugs.

Apart from the large 5.9-inch screen and the fingerprint scanner, little else is known about the device. If rumors are true, the Nexus 6 phablet and the HTC Nexus 8.9 Volantis Tablet might be launched along with Android L that is scheduled to be released this fall. We will have to wait and watch what Google is actually planning to do.
